Building a Language-rich Environment
Most teaching parents know that the simple act of speaking to a child, even before he can respond, builds a language-rich environment and stimulates the child to learn to speak. Repetition is key to language development, and there is no better way to ensure that than to read to your child.

Wordless Illustrations, Endless Interpretations
Usborne First Thousand Words in English is a lovely way to introduce language to your toddlers. Each one- or two-page spread is of a realistic scene your child should be familiar with, from the backyard to the hospital. The warm, charming, wordless illustrations lend themselves to endless interpretations; each new story layers upon the last, and each storyline reinforces familiar words while introducing unfamiliar ones.

Key Objects Depicted
Throughout First Thousand Words, key objects are pulled out of the larger illustration, and depicted around the edges of the page. Point out the objects, have your child repeat the word and then find the item in the larger illustration.

A Great Conversation Starter
First Thousand Words will provide your child with lots of familiar things to find and name, characters to talk about, and opportunities for counting groups of objects or discovering matching pairs. When it comes to building your toddler's language skills, Usborne First Thousand Words is a great conversation starter!

    LOVE June 19, 2014
    Reviewer: Catherine E.
I had this book (but the French version) as a child, and I was so happy to see they have changed it very little! On amazon I noticed there were several reviews mentioning the grimaces, or snarling faces, but honestly it didn't bother me. I think most of it was in context and again, I remember it from when I was a kid and it doesn't bother me. Bought this for my son who has not been much of a talker (almost three now) and this book has helped him. He enjoys looking at the pictures and repeating the words after I've introduced them to him. He likes showing his baby sister the pictures, too :)

Lots of learning in one book! August 9, 2013
    Reviewer: DaNae
The kids and I like discovering new things on the pages every time we take it out. I grew up with "Where's Waldo" books. But I didn't want to buy those because of the questionable content in them. This book is just as fun. And my 2 year old enjoys looking at all of the animals. But my daughter did get a little too excited while flipping through the book and ripped some pages.

Amazing for babies and ESL students June 2, 2012
    Reviewer: Rhonda
As a parent and ESL teacher, I highly recommend this book. It is an easy way to be sure that young children gain a basic vocabulary and can spur parents into thinking of words their children need but may not have learned through everyday life yet. It's also a very gentle way to introduce new vocabulary to ESL students, international adoptees, and exchange students who need a quick grasp of some basic words. This isn't a complete language program, obviously, but it's a wonderful supplement and belongs on every young child's shelf.

Usborne strikes again, excellent book! May 31, 2012
    Reviewer: Erin
Usborne is one of the best learning books ever. They have SO many neat educational books and this is one of the earliest I've used with my kiddo. He is only 2 and finds this book fascinating. The pages are colorful and glossy, very vivid pictures that get his attention. He loves to point to all the matching pictures. Every page has one large picture surrounded by all the individual items that your are teaching your child and they can find them within the larger picture. That is the part he loves, finding and pointing them out. So you are teaching words and they are repeating and finding them. Learning while having fun, which is what Usborne is all about. This is a must buy for every baby/toddler!
