Timberdoodle's review
Better Reading And Decoding Skills

According to national standards, students in grades four to twelve must now be able to demonstrate their knowledge of how to use common Greek and Latin roots for analyzing the meaning of complex words.

Lovely! Isn't this just what we needed, one more requirement from the government that our children will be tested for yearly? Yet surprisingly enough, it is one that makes sense. Children who have a solid grasp of word roots are bound to be children with better reading comprehension skills, primarily because they have acquired the ability to decode words. But regardless of the benefit, you're probably not looking for another task. In that case, you will appreciate the Word Roots series. It will teach your children the meanings of Latin and Greek prefixes, roots, and suffixes of words commonly used in English. With reproducible pages, the entire family can be prepared for any assessment tests their state throws at them.

Word Roots teaches children the meanings of prefixes, roots, and suffixes commonly used in English. Learning word elements dramatically improves spelling and the ability to decode unfamiliar words. Word Roots will add hundreds of words to your child's vocabulary and greater depth to their thinking and writing.

Includes teaching suggestions and answers.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2017 Third-Grade Curriculum Kit!

For each lesson students first learn the meanings of prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Then they:

  • Divide known and unknown words into their elements or assemble elements to form whole words.
  • Match word parts or whole words to their definitions by analyzing their meanings.
  • Apply their new vocabulary in sentences.

Reviews from Timberdoodle's Blogger Review Team:

"...Each lesson focuses on Root Words and either suffixes or prefixes that go with the Root Word. He was able to grasp this concept through the great graphs they have in the lessons, dividing up the prefix/suffix and their definition and the particular Root Word that is being studied. He had no problem understanding how to make new words and definitions by combining the prefix/suffix with the Root. Each lesson is between 2 and 4 pages long, we usually did a page or 2 at a time. I was not able to completely let him do this independently, I probably could have if he were a little older. I was honestly surprised by how much he enjoys this book! I will definitely be getting the next one in the series when he completes this one!..."

Beginning Word Roots January 17, 2017

Word Roots is pretty fun to do.  My mom made up a funny song she sings when it's time to do our word roots each day.  I get to learn new words and make up sentences with those words.  Making up the sentences is kind of hard sometimes but my mom helps me.  The lessons aren't very long so that's good.

    Great Addition September 25, 2015
    Reviewer: Deja
I got this as an addition to our curriculum. I wanted to start at the beginner even though my daughter is in a higher grade. She is not a great speller so I'm hoping that this will help, plus help her learn the meaning to bigger words. So far it is nice and easy to do and understand and she is enjoying seeing how words we use everyday were formed from ancient words.

    Good Book August 24, 2015

This has been a really good book for my reluctant reader/speller/language arts kid. He has liked that it does not seem overwhelming, I like that he is learning but it seems lower pressured. I don't think this would be good for a 3rd grade+ child like one of my other sons who is a natural reader/speller. It would work when they are younger though!

    Wasn't amazing, wasn't awful July 24, 2015

I would PROBABLY get this again, but I'm not sure. I really like the concept of truly understanding the origins of words, but I'm not sure how much was retained for my 8 yr old. Kind of on the dry side, but I've seen worse.

Love the way this book is set up! It is really easy to use and my son loves it! He was struggling with reading and such and that is why we pulled him from school so that we could help him get caught up and this is helping us with teaching him! I Cant wait till we get further in the book to see what it brings!
