Timberdoodle's review Learn more
If you are looking for a complete, effective phonics program, Phonics Pathways is just the ticket. With a simple layout and steady progress, this no-frills, straightforward approach to phonics tutoring is easy enough for even novice parents/teachers to understand and use.

Phonics Pathways is logically laid out with virtually no teacher preparation involved. A multi-sensory approach means that all learning types can benefit from this book.

With a mere 10 to 15 minutes a day, usually one or two pages, your child will be reading before you know it. Built-in reviews to aid retention include sentences that can be sounded out based entirely on the lessons previously taught, which eliminates guessing.

Phonics Pathways includes the phonics rules that other phonics-based programs do not. It also contains spelling rules in the lessons as well as quick-reference spelling and pronunciation charts. (It also has inane maxims on many pages that can be used as discussion starters or completely ignored.) This book is essential for all pre-readers and their parents.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2017 First-Grade Curriculum Kit!

Phonics Pathways, 10th Edition January 30, 2017
Reviewer: Jess
I like these readers very well. They have ones that focus on just consonants, vowels (short and long), and letter blends. Not too short and not too long for struggling readers.

A little busy but gets the job done August 27, 2015
Reviewer: Shannon R.
My son had completed the first 70 lessons of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It was a wonderful book for starting out, but at that point he stalled out. Phonics Pathways has been a great book for rounding up his phonics. I do believe they could have made the pages more user-friendly by eliminating the little cartoons of encouragement.

I just don't understand August 15, 2015
Reviewer: Kelly O.
We received this workbook as part of our child's first grade curriculum. So far we've loved almost all of the materials, with this workbook being the one glaring exception. All I can say is that after just flipping through it I'm grateful my child is already a fluent reader. If your child is at all reluctant to tackle workbook pages, this one can feel overwhelming. There is so much information on each page that I'm confused about whether we're supposed to read it or hunt for an activity. Also, the suggestions for how to use the book are laborious. This is not something you can hand over to a child while you're working with another. I realize I'm in a distinct minority with this review. Every site I've visited gives this workbook glowing reviews. So, take this for what it's worth but if you want something that feels "plug and play" I could not recommend this book.

So thankful to have found this! July 19, 2015

This book is working out great for my 5 year old (and me). Not long ago, she was having trouble learning to read and I seriously started doubting I could teach her. Even though I had no trouble teaching my oldest, it just was not working with her. She was very hesitant and distracted. I couldn't even get her to remember the short sounds of vowels from one day to the next. Within a few days of starting this program she improved dramatically, and I could see her confidence growing. She has no trouble remembering the sounds anymore, plus she can blend! She is always very eager to get started and never seems bored or discouraged anymore. This was a great find and I could not be happier with the results so far. Bottom line: It's easy to use, fun and gets results. I highly recommend it.

Phonics Pathways, 10th Edition-LOVE IT. February 4, 2015
Reviewer: Vickie S.
AWESOME. Logical progression from simple short vowel sounds to multiple syllable words... each page/lesson builds upon the other. it.makes.sense! I swear it's like finding the Holy Grail!!! ~cue dramatic music~ We are able to use this book not only to learn (or find the gaps in her learning thus far of) phonics, but also for reading skills (as it starts out so simple), to copywork practice, to spelling, etc. etc. I truly feel my 6.5 year old has learned more about Phonics in the last month than she did in over 6 months of private school. Granted, much of it has been review (we're on page 94 right now), but just think, not only is it review, but it is filling in the blanks on some things she hadn't been taught yet. No falling through the cracks with this one. If they don't get the spelling/dictation correct? Repeat the next day. One day, my daughter got everything right, except that she did all her K's backwards (common, I guess?), so the next day, our penmanship included Ks.
