Language Smarts
Out of all of our new Critical Thinking Press titles, Language Smarts is my favorite. If you've used and loved Mathematical Reasoning than you'll be delighted by the familiar, colorful pages and thinking-skills based approach.

Language Smarts is specifically designed to be thorough enough to be a complete language arts curriculum, but unique enough to be a valuable supplement if your child is ready for more than they are getting from another approach.

Rhymes and riddles, editing activities, mind-benders, sequencing, writing… each page is brightly colored and contains enough white space to feel easily doable. With 316-336 pages per book, 1-2 pages a day will have your student completing the book within a school year. Don't be surprised though if they ask for more. To a child, the pages often seem more like fun puzzles than school work!

No Drudgery For English Class Anymore June 6, 2016
Reviewer: Sunflower Seed from Colorado Springs , CO United States
I read through the other reviews and sure, there are issues of some slight imperfections but honestly I just work through them with my first grader. He's 6 and just thrilled with his English book. Thanks to Timberdoodle for offering this series! For the longest time my first grader was mostly interested in math (which isn't bad at all) but until this book other English programs weren't getting through the concepts of grammar without frustrating him. For me, a happy student is a student who will remember more of what he's taught.

Not for us October 29, 2015
Reviewer: Julia
I like the idea of this book but in practice it is just does not work for us. My daughter was excited about the colorful pages and the fun look, but every day this book was frustrating and on extreme days, brought her to tears. If your first grader isn't a super-reader, but rather an average reader for a 6 year old, expect to be doing a lot of side by side reading for this book. Maybe we will try it again later in the year.

Probably not for younger 1st graders October 13, 2015
Reviewer: Catherine E.
My daughter flew through kindergarten so she is only 5.5 and doing 1st grade. She's done pretty well so far, but this book seems to be over her head right now. We spent 15 minutes on ONE page where you are supposed to read three words, cross out the one that does not have a short vowel sound, and then add a new word that does have a short vowel. This concept was just too much for her. I think we'll like the book more later (except for the part where W is referred to as a vowel!) but it's not for 5 year olds! TD Reply: Katie,Thank you so much for your clear and helpful review! We have brought this book's errors to the attention of the publisher, including the reference to 'w' as a vowel, and they have been very responsive to resolve errors for future printings, as well as publish an errata list at http://www.criticalthinking.com/errata. We hope you and your daughter find this book more enjoyable in the future when she's a bit older. Until then, thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us and with our customers!

Makes Learning FUN September 24, 2015
Reviewer: Kari
My 1st grader hardly even notices that she's doing phonics work with this workbook. It's so fun and creative that it doesn't feel like a typical classroom lecture. It's helped a child that once dreaded language arts get excited to do her work.

a bit hard for kids who dont like writing September 3, 2015
Reviewer: Chalanda S.
My son is very advanced at math but struggles with writing...although this is age appropriate and the lessons are spot on I wish there were more fun pages like in the math reasoning style books. It takes a lot of pushing to get us through 2 pages a day because he hates the writing...gets the concepts but struggles with the manual work. That being said it is stil better than Horizons which we used last year...we were totally lost in that book.
