    About the Language Lessons Series:

    Charlotte Mason: Learning in Context
As soon as the review copies of these books arrived, I was smitten. This is the finest implementation of the Charlotte Mason method of instruction I have ever seen. If you are new to home education, the Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) name may not be familiar to you. A British educator who devoted her life to improving the quality of children's education, to Charlotte Mason, language arts skills consisted of narration, the child telling back a story; copywork, the transcribing of a well-written piece of literature as handwriting practice; and dictation, which is spelling and grammar taught within the context of rich language instead of static lists.

    From Theory to Ready-to-Use
Sandi Queen has done an excellent job of combining those lesson essentials, and even if she had stopped there it would have been a fine program. But instead, she takes the series from satisfactory to exceptional by adding delightful flourishes that include picture studies with full-color paintings, basic phonics instruction, poetry appreciation and writing, creative writing, and much more.

Full-Color Paintings Make These Books Sparkle
It is the gorgeous reproduction of notable paintings that will first catch your eye. True to the Charlotte Mason philosophy, the picture studies are based on classic works of art, introducing the child to the paintings of great artists, encouraging him to study them by asking pertinent questions, and then asking for a narration of what he has observed.

Very Short Lessons Cover Lots of Material Easily
Likewise characteristic of the Charlotte Mason approach, each lesson takes a scant five to fifteen minutes a day. This increases a bit with age, but is never as time-consuming as you will find in the more staid programs typical of government schools. And Language Lessons doesn't try to do everything every day, which alleviates the tedium associated with other language arts programs. I know many mothers who struggle under the multiple pressures of parenting and educating, to say nothing of their responsibilities as wives and Christ-followers. But I don't know any mother who is too busy to use this program. Each book is a large, consumable, perfect-bound paperback, containing 180 lessons, and in full color.

Language Lessons for the Very Young 1 November 7, 2013
    Reviewer: Flora E.
A wonderful program indeed! What really interested me is that it was written from a Charlotte Mason perspective and that's exactly what I was looking to return to this school year. My daughter just turned eight years old, is in the third grade and a fluent reader. She truly enjoys her language arts program!.....mainly because the lessons are short and sweet! This can be completed by a younger child, but you as the parent know your child best ~ if he/she is ready. I personally wanted to wait until third grade to begin grammar and just decided to start here, Book 1 of Lang. Lessons for the Very Young. Layout of the book is wonderful, beautiful artwork and poetry!

Thorough and Wholesome June 18, 2013
    Reviewer: Kimberlee
This book truly is the Charlotte Mason Method done well. The lessons are short and sweet -- and by "sweet," I mean tender and lovely. The lessons focus on beautiful classical and romantic literature -- mostly poetry, with a smattering of romantic art and small bit of prose. I love the way it incorporates lessons about parts of speech. My kids -- unlike when I was a kid -- are enjoying learning about nouns, verbs, etc. My kids' least favorite part is the copywork. At times, the poems for copywork are a bit long and tedious. I try to have them do more than one lesson in a day in those cases, otherwise they become overwhelmed at the prospect of copywork for sometimes two weeks on end. However, they are very short lessons. If a child gets into the routine of copywork, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to complete a lesson. My kids tend to want to do many lessons at once when it doesn't involve copywork. They really enjoy the rest of the book, and I feel they are learning at a good pace, and keeping up with grade-level standards.

    great book! February 21, 2013

We really have enjoyed this book. We really like that it has lots of different things- poetry, grammer, picture study, and that it has everything that you'll need right in the book. The only things we didn't love is that the pictures are pixilated (which is too bad because they are a great selection of pictures!) and that there are not 3 lines to do the practice handwriting on... but it's a nice book that is very quickly accomplished (which is helpful for those who don't love to do them!). We'll continue to use these!

Excellent Learning Tool January 2, 2013
    Reviewer: Stephanie
I really enjoy using this book. It focuses on a number of different rules for grammar, including poetry rhyming, handwriting, capitalization, etc. There is a LOT of copywork, which my daughter hates, but it's good practice for her and necessary for teaching her to write neatly. The paintings in the book are just beautiful, and we really enjoy taking the time to appreciate the art and talking at length about the pictures and what we imagine is happening in them. Very enjoyable!

Great Language Arts Curriculum May 31, 2012
    Reviewer: KR
This curriculum is easy to use. I ordered this for my 2nd grader and another for my 5th grader. The kids work at their own pace. Each lesson is short and sweet making it nice for the kids to want to do Language Arts. The kids usually will finish an extra lesson or two at their own discretion.
