Timberdoodle's review

Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set In the 1980s, when widespread homeschooling in the USA was still in its infancy, I read of a homeschooling mom in Ireland who used multi-colored, multi-length rods to teach her children a variety of mathematical concepts. Using rods in an assortment of ten bright colors to depict numerical values, her children could easily see a multitude of mathematical concepts as they manipulated the rods. The process made perfect sense to me, and I knew our children would benefit from such a versatile mathematical manipulative. After a bit of investigative work, I discovered Cuisenaire rods, and we have been enthusiasts ever since. Preschool Through Eighth Grade For over fifty years, Cuisenaire rods have been used to teach a wide variety of mathematical topics such as the basic four operations, fractions, area, solving simple equations, and more. Used in classrooms around the world, this essential learning tool is suitable for preschoolers and on through eighth grade. Rod Track Included The set of plastic rods contains seventy-four rods (the smallest rod is a one cm cube, the largest is ten cm long), a tray with lid, an activity guide, and a transparent rod track. The Transparent Rod Track is a nifty little tool that looks like a thirty cm ruler with a one cm groove down its center. It is particularly helpful for early practice of addition and subtraction. Designed specifically for use with Cuisenaire rods, students build Cuisenaire rod trains to practice counting, equivalence, and operation skills.

My daughter loves these, and although we have t formally started using them with our curriculum, they have been very useful.

Great manipulative! October 13, 2015 Reviewer: Catherine E.
We received these as part of the1st grade package. At first, I was a little disappointed that these do not connect like the centimeter cubes I used in school. But I have actually come to prefer them this way (non-connecting). These are plastic, but good quality. They aren't cheap or flimsy looking. My only complaint is the lid. It's virtually useless since it doesn't actually snap into place - it just sets on top. I prefer to keep mine stored in a zip lock bag. That way, at least I know if they get dropped, I won't have tiny pieces flying everywhere. Very minor drawback, for an otherwise awesome product.

Could be better July 28, 2014 Reviewer: Jessica S.
A few things would make this set better: markings on the rods to show how many units make up each piece & a more sturdy tray (it is thin plastic & mine already has a crack from shipping, plus the lid doesn't fit on securely, it kind-of just sits on top).As it is, it is a fine basic set. It will be useful. TD reply: Hello Jessica,

We're sorry to hear that you received a cracked tray. A replacement is shipping out to you.
