Timberdoodle's review Learn more

Tile-laying games have been popular in Europe for many years and are gaining popularity here in the USA. Of all the tile-laying games we have tried, Wooly Bully has the most family-pleasing potential. Not only is it a bit simpler to play, it readily lends itself to minor rule tweaking, making it even more user friendly for everyone. (See our suggested tweaks at the bottom of this page.)

In Wooly Bully, players are shepherds, each with a flock of sheep that they have to care for and protect from becoming prey to packs of wolves. The object of the game is to build an enclosed field with as many sheep of your color in it as possible while blocking your opponents' similar plans.

Wooly Bully is an edge-matching tile-laying game. The thick, laminated tiles are nice to handle and the delightful artwork pictures the sheep with many appealing expressions. The game rules are stated very simply, and include full-color illustrations and helpful hints.

Each player draws 4 tiles from the bag. Because each tile is double-sided, you have twice the options when deciding what to play. The end result is that almost every tile will be somewhat useful to every player. Instead of the typical place-a-tile, draw-a-tile method, when you place a tile, you draw as many new tiles as sides you matched to with the tile just placed. So, if you place a tile next to two other tiles, you draw two. The winner is the one with the largest sheep pen.

There are four wolf tiles in the game. When placed in a forest, they will disqualify any adjacent fields that would otherwise score. Suddenly, you discover the game is not as easy as it looks. Thankfully there are also four hunters

Tweaks:
The double-sided tiles can be difficult to manage, especially for young children. The easiest solution is to reduce the number of tiles you are using. Drawing two or three tiles to start the game, and then tweaking the rules to play one and draw one, makes tile management a whole lot easier. Older children and adults may not need this adjustment. Our family did not like the scoring method where only the largest field was significant. If you really were a shepherd, then any sheep, safely penned, should count towards your total. It does raise the scoring totals and rewards the ability of players to create many sheep fields instead of their one, big field. The need for strategy is still there, and we have found playing this way is just as challenging, but more enjoyable.

A favorite game October 17, 2008
Reviewer: Jennifer L. from Rib Lake, WI
My children range from 17 years to 5 months. Other then the 5 month old, this is a game the whole family can play. The 3 year old needs a little help remembering the rules, but loves matching the sheep. So, we adapt the game to more of a matching game for the younger children and then more of a by the rules game for the older children. We all love it alot, and we have alot of different games in the house. I would say that this is by far one of the favorties.
