Timberdoodle's review
What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know
I (Joy) have mixed feelings about What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know. Our family never got into fairy tales and magic, and a large portion of the read-aloud stories at the beginning of What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know have these topics in common. Yet I love the author's emphasis on reading aloud to your children and the wide variety of art, math, music, and science activities to do with your kindergartner.

Includes Twenty Nuggets of History
How many brain-dead moms (or even babysitters like me!) would love to be able to pick up a book and simply flip through it for ideas? The tipping point for us was the twenty nuggets of history located in the middle of this book. Short stories about famous figures or simple synopses of USA history will help your child continue to develop the basics of a historical perspective and prepare him for jumping into a formal history program next year.

A Very Helpful Resource
In a nutshell, even if you skip or modify some of the read-aloud stories, as our family would have, you will find What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know to be a very helpful resource for everything from teaching handwriting to fun math projects you can do together.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2017 Kindergarten Curriculum Kit!

Not loving this book January 13, 2016

While I think it is a great resource, it is sort of put together in a strange way. Some of the stories and history lessons are quite wordy and hard for a kindie to sit through but then you have simple counting and letters and things. There are parts are very kindie friendly and others not so much. I think it would be better not part of the curriculum as it is sort of hodge lodge and really better as a reference to a pre kindie type of approach.

Good for starting conversations September 25, 2015

This book is very textbook like, so reading word for word to a kindergartner doesn't quite work for us. But I begin the lesson and then we talk about the rest. How does a plant grow? I ask him what he thinks then I tell him the real way and we talk about it some more. The music and rhymes we have fun with but the rest of the lessons are a really good introduction to basic lessons for each subject. He already knows his directions and is learning about continents, and loves all things science. This is a great book so you don't have to guess what your kindergartner should know, I just don't think reading it verbatim is the way to go. Have fun with it so your kid will too.

Full of information September 2, 2015

This book covers so many different things that it is incredible. I do wish there were maybe some more hands on activities than what is already in there to go along with the lessons, but all in all this is a great book. I highly recommend as any kinder curriculum.

    Good resource August 17, 2015

This is great for keeping track of what your child should be learning/should have learned. I think it's geared more towards 4K-Preschool ages than 5 year olds or higher, as the material is super simplistic. It is well organized and provides great lists of supplemental materials per subject. The book is great on its own, but makes a better supplemental resource.

    It's ok January 19, 2015

We have this one and the preschool version. Both have been ok...my daughter does enjoy them, but I feel like it's all information/stories/poems, etc that we could (and do) get from other source (books we already have, online, co-op meetings, etc). It is nice to have it all in one place though.
