Usborne Then and Now
Usborne Then and Now will give your preschooler a gentle, pictorial introduction to the concept of history and how society changes over time. The stunning pictures depict two parallel scenes of "then" and "now" -- side-by-side depictions from different times in history.

With visual comparisons between today's fashions, transportation, and work or family life, and that of the late 1800s or early 1900s, Then and Now gives you and your child lots of opportunity to discuss the differences and how they came about. Then and Now’s pictures are very detailed, and there is even a bit of text to guide your discussions, as well as prompts for your child to look for specific items.

While we would have been more comfortable with the attire in the beach scenes of long ago, a permanent marker or a touch of whiteout brings even today’s beach setting up to a more modest level. Usborne Then and Now will help your preschooler grasp the idea of history and will whet his appetite to know more.

So short. January 15, 2013
Reviewer: Mama to 5
While the book is indeed interesting, I don't feel like it was a book worth purchasing. Something borrowed at the library would have been more than enough. It is very small, flimsy and short. A very quick read that doesn't need to be on our shelves as a "go to" book for everyday use. I think you can look at any book about history and say what it was like "then" and look around your living room for the "now". Just wasn't a hit for us. Read it once and hasn't been touched since.

Nice introduction to history May 31, 2012
Reviewer: JennyC
This book is just lovely! It's a nice way to introduce the concept of history to little ones. My girls(twins, now 4) are fascinated by the "then" pictures. I agree with the other review that it is also a nice way to point out our many modern conveniences we should be thankful for, especially if grumbling about chores is an issue!

Great introduction to history May 31, 2012
Reviewer: dmrsmom
I plan to use this book with my son when we homeschool preschool this fall. He loves to read and I believe he will be very interested to discover that things have not always been as they are now. He got a glimpse of this while we read Little House in the Big Woods and I look forward to deepening his understanding with this beautiful book.

Cute Book! October 3, 2011
Reviewer: Penny Clark from Pacific Grove , CA United States
This is a cute book and a great introduction to how things change over time.  The pages are full of interesting things to look at and fun things to look for when reading the book.  It's also a good book for leading a discussion on inventions and the things we have for which we can be thankful.  We even talked about things that perhaps were better in the old days.  My 8 year old enjoyed the book just as much as the younger ones!  As for the beach page, there are people in 2 piece bathing suits but they are cartoons and I don't find it too offensive.  As mentioned earlier, we used that page to discuss how some change is not always for the better.
