About The Story of the World series:

    Easy-to-Implement, Captivating Chronological History
This captivating read-aloud series will introduce your children to the marvelous history of the world presented chronologically from the beginning of time. Each volume of The Story of the World includes the details of battles, kingdoms, cultures, and customs from every continent and major people group woven together into a story that children will find mesmerizing. With short chapters, many less than seven pages, The Story of the World presents history in small, easily-digestible chunks. Of particular appeal to children will be the occasional story about a hypothetical child in the culture of that time and fictional stories that were popular during that time.

The Best History Books Available for 1st-6th Grade!
The Story of the World is intended to be a read-aloud program for first through sixth grade, but it can work equally well as independent reading by an older child. Don't restrict your scope of history to just American history. These are what we consider the best world history books for this age group. If you have ever found history to be dull and humdrum, these books might just change that opinion!

Combine with the Hands-On Student Activity Book for a Full Curriculum
The Curriculum/Activity Guide offers parents and teachers a complete history curriculum for use with The Story of the World. In addition to extensive reading lists and cross-references to the most common illustrated encyclopedias, the Activity Book contains comprehension questions, sample narrations, maps, coloring pages, and activities for each chapter in The Story of the World. Children and parent-teachers love the activities, which range from coloring pages and games to mummifying a chicken!

Attempts to Include All Significant Historical and Cultural Accounts
Note: Please do not consider this series a Providential view of history which recognizes God's hand in history. It is first and foremost a history text that attempts to include all significant historical and cultural accounts. If you are a conservative Christian, you may want to opt out of a couple of activities. And where you find details with Biblical references that are inaccurate because of sparseness, use this opportunity to interject more of His story. Bible history is best taught with a Bible so we encourage your family to read through the Bible every year. These are very minor issues that are easily addressed and shouldn't keep you from this overall excellent program.

    A huge jump from SOTW 3 August 18, 2014
    Reviewer: Maggie
We are about 8 weeks into school now and I am really disliking SOTW volume 4. It says in the intro that it is for 4-8 graders and I heartily agree with the upper end of that spectrum. We are doing this in the 4th grade, however, as recommended by Timberdoodle and have found the activity book a waste. The map work is completely different and much more of a geography lesson asking questions that may not have been in the material read instead being a reinforcement like previous additions. Right now all I use it for is the outlines, but even then, I'm having to be much more hands on than I used to. We also ordered the test book which we've used in the past, but the format is completely different and again, much better suited to a middle schooler. Fortunately I did not attempt to teach this simultaneously with my first grader (as this is often suggested for a multi level lesson) she would have lost her mind! TD Reply: Maggie, we're so sorry it's not what you expected! We do have a couple of notes on our website stating things like "Due to the intended age level and the subject matter contained in the book, the Activity Book for Volume 4 does not contain coloring pages." If you have a moment, we would love to hear how we could have made this more helpful for you. Regardless though, we do have a 60-day return policy, if it's in new condition and not working for you, we'd love to take it back and issue you a refund. Thank you so much for the feedback, even if it wasn't a perfect fit for you!

    A Must Have! June 1, 2014
    Reviewer: Jennnifer R.
I think the activity book is a must if you are planning to read The Story of the World. There are many differnet activities for each chapter that are fun, hands on and interesting. The review questions and the outlines for each chapter are key in making sure the student is comprehending what they've just read. The downside to the activity book and SOTW is that it is a lot of work!

Activities for every learning style June 1, 2012
    Reviewer: Laura
This book is full of all types of enrichment activities to complement the Story of the World book or audio discs. We let each child pick one or two to do for each chapter. We have enough to choose from that all learning styles are covered and have some left over in case we want to do this again as a refresher in a few years.

I was very impressed by how much we all learned July 23, 2009
Reviewer: Heather C. from Williams Bay, WI
The year that we used Story of the World 1 and the corresponding Activity Guide was our best out of our ten years of homeschooling (so far!).  The children learned more about world history than I had learned in all of my own public school years, and, due to the activities and resources in the Activity Guide, found it to be great fun.  Four years later, my upper elementary and middle school children want to go back and do the maps, coloring sheets, and projects from SOTW 1 again, as they'd enjoyed it so much the first time.  I was very impressed by how much we all learned from SOTW1 and by what a pleasure it was to teach.  However, using SOTW 1 takes more work on the part of the teacher than workbook based or pre-packaged curricula.  The Activity Guide makes recommendations of resource books to be purchased or checked out from the library and art projects to be done.  Planning ahead to acquire the supplemental books and project materials is necessary for success with this program.  Interacting with the students in narration and discussion is also necessary, so this is not a good program for a hands-off parent/teacher.  This program should work well for a family of any size. Older students can read about related topics in more depth from other resources while the younger ones read the SOTW text, then the whole family can enjoy the hands-on activities together.  The Activity Guide gives resource ideas for a variety of levels and abilities, which makes this easier.  I'd gladly use this program again!
