About The Story of the World series:

    Easy-to-Implement, Captivating Chronological History
This captivating read-aloud series will introduce your children to the marvelous history of the world presented chronologically from the beginning of time. Each volume of The Story of the World includes the details of battles, kingdoms, cultures, and customs from every continent and major people group woven together into a story that children will find mesmerizing. With short chapters, many less than seven pages, The Story of the World presents history in small, easily-digestible chunks. Of particular appeal to children will be the occasional story about a hypothetical child in the culture of that time and fictional stories that were popular during that time.

The Best History Books Available for 1st-6th Grade!
The Story of the World is intended to be a read-aloud program for first through sixth grade, but it can work equally well as independent reading by an older child. Don't restrict your scope of history to just American history. These are what we consider the best world history books for this age group. If you have ever found history to be dull and humdrum, these books might just change that opinion!

Combine with the Hands-On Student Activity Book for a Full Curriculum
The Curriculum/Activity Guide offers parents and teachers a complete history curriculum for use with The Story of the World. In addition to extensive reading lists and cross-references to the most common illustrated encyclopedias, the Activity Book contains comprehension questions, sample narrations, maps, coloring pages, and activities for each chapter in The Story of the World. Children and parent-teachers love the activities, which range from coloring pages and games to mummifying a chicken!

Attempts to Include All Significant Historical and Cultural Accounts
Note: Please do not consider this series a Providential view of history which recognizes God's hand in history. It is first and foremost a history text that attempts to include all significant historical and cultural accounts. If you are a conservative Christian, you may want to opt out of a couple of activities. And where you find details with Biblical references that are inaccurate because of sparseness, use this opportunity to interject more of His story. Bible history is best taught with a Bible so we encourage your family to read through the Bible every year. These are very minor issues that are easily addressed and shouldn't keep you from this overall excellent program.

Once again I find myself a wee bit jealous of our son! What a wonderful book filled with informational chapter reviews, great suggested additional readings and wonderful activities to support and reinforce chapter teachings! Our son looks forward to History each day and completes the day's lesson longing to do more.

    Great for multiple-age teaching! August 25, 2011

Our family greatly enjoys Story of the World.  We started our experience with the previous edition, and are really impressed with the improvements made in this newest edition activity book.  The black-line pictures are larger, clearer, and ...just better!  Some of the older pictures were almost cartoonish, and that is not the case with the new activity pages.  We enjoy the craft suggestions and the kids are especially fond of the occasional recipes to try.  Our entire family highly recommends this product--even to our non-homeschooled friends!

This makes the program complete. June 1, 2011
Reviewer: Jennifer Schneider from Rhinelander, WI United States
We enjoyed reading the main book Story of the World, but I wanted to review the information with my kids and I am terrible at figuring out questions on my own.  The Activity Book is PERFECT for me.  I like that it asks the basic questions I want them to remember and doesn't go too in-depth into details.  People can be easily overwhelmed by the extra SUGGESTED reading and activity ideas at the end of each chapter.  If you WANT to do more in-depth studies of a particular subject/time-period - here is where you can find a lot of very interesting books and activities to expand on what you just learned.  Do not think these are necessary!   Three times a week we would just usually pick one activity that the kids would enjoy.  They remembered a lot of the lesson from the activities we did pick to do, so I would highly recommend doing them!  I also liked that I could adapt the activities to many different age levels.  This is my FAVORITE history program by FAR!  Enjoy!

I was very impressed by how much we all learned July 23, 2009
Reviewer: Heather C. from Williams Bay, WI
The year that we used Story of the World 1 and the corresponding Activity Guide was our best out of our ten years of homeschooling (so far!).  The children learned more about world history than I had learned in all of my own public school years, and, due to the activities and resources in the Activity Guide, found it to be great fun.  Four years later, my upper elementary and middle school children want to go back and do the maps, coloring sheets, and projects from SOTW 1 again, as they'd enjoyed it so much the first time.  I was very impressed by how much we all learned from SOTW1 and by what a pleasure it was to teach.  However, using SOTW 1 takes more work on the part of the teacher than workbook based or pre-packaged curricula.  The Activity Guide makes recommendations of resource books to be purchased or checked out from the library and art projects to be done.  Planning ahead to acquire the supplemental books and project materials is necessary for success with this program.  Interacting with the students in narration and discussion is also necessary, so this is not a good program for a hands-off parent/teacher.  This program should work well for a family of any size. Older students can read about related topics in more depth from other resources while the younger ones read the SOTW text, then the whole family can enjoy the hands-on activities together.  The Activity Guide gives resource ideas for a variety of levels and abilities, which makes this easier.  I'd gladly use this program again!
