Just one more chapter, please! |

These volumes have been a pleasure to read for both student and parent. Not belabored with lots of dates, the information is presented much as a story (thus the title) and keeps the reader's attention. In fact, we've actually had our children ask for "just one more chapter, please!" Rather than following the history of a people from start to finish or present day, the information is presented by time period so that the reader has a sense of which events were happening concurrently and how they may have influenced each other.

The Story of the World history series is great! |

The Story of the World history series is great! The storytelling format is engaging enough to interest my youngest children, while the salient historical points are covered for my older kids. The accompanying Activity books are a valuable asset, cementing the history lesson with fun and memorable projects, map work, and lists of related books. They are a strong base to build upon!

We used this with a kindergartener and a second grader. We loved the stories and we used the activity book too. The mapwork really helped them to see where things were happening. We checked out a lot of the suggested books from the library, especially if they were interested in a topic. The pages to color helped them to listen to the story. We added in making a big timeline and we posted the pages they colored on the timeline. My only frustration with it was that it did not include biblical events enough and tie them in, so we added this in ourselves, inserting Bible readings between chapters where appropriate. We have used volumes 1 and 2 and will use volumes 3 and 4 in the next few years.

Informative and easy to understand |

I have found The Story of the World books to be very informative and easy to understand. The first 2 volumes are simple enough for third or fourth graders to read themselves with some follow up to make sure they are understanding what they are reading. Volumes three and four are a bit more detailed. I do not recommend them for a first or second grader unless someone is reading the books to them and explaining the concepts. I think there are other materials that are better for this age child. I personally feel that these books are excellent for grades 3-6 with volumes three and four acceptable for grade 7-8. I even had my high schooler use them as a supplement to some other materials. I was disappointed with the activity books. I did not feel like they were challenging enough for the child in grades five and beyond. I was hoping for some more pages that had matching or fill in the blanks--rather than simple maps and simple crafts. I would have enjoyed these had they been geared for the older child.

Helpful for children on the autism spectrum!! |

I want to let families with children on the autism spectrum know that this has been a helpful history curriculum for us. We have a 15-year old who has Aspegers and severe learning differences. The STORY aspect of the program (plus something to color while he listens) has been very helpful to him. We use the audio CDs with every lesson. Even though the grade level is below his reading comprehension level, we find that he RETAINS more of what he learns with this program because it is told in story form. That is more important than using boring higher level materials.
