The Story of the World Volume 1: History For The Classical Child
Ancient Times - Revised Edition
View a sample from Story of the World Vol 1

From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor
Story of the World Volume 1 covers Ancient Times. This is the first of a four-volume series and covers the major historical events beginning with the earliest nomads and ending with the last Roman emperor. (5000 BC to 400 AD)

About The Story Of The World series:

Easy-To-Implement Captivating Chronological History
This captivating read-aloud series will introduce your children to the marvelous history of the world presented chronologically from the beginning of time. Each volume of The Story of the World includes the details of battles, kingdoms, cultures, and customs from every continent and major people group woven together into a story that children will find mesmerizing. With short chapters, many less than seven pages, The Story of the World presents history in small, easily-digestible chunks. Of particular appeal to children will be the occasional story about a hypothetical child in the culture of that time and fictional stories that were popular during that time.

The Best History Books Available for 1st-6th Grade!
The Story of the World is intended to be a read-aloud program for the first-through sixth-grade, but it can work equally well as independent reading by an older child. Don't restrict your scope of history to just American History. These are what we consider the best world history books for this age group. If you have ever found history to be dull and humdrum, these books might just change that opinion!

Combine with the Hands-On Student Activity Book for a full Curriculum
The Curriculum/Activity Guide offers parents and teachers a complete history curriculum for use with The Story of the World. In addition to extensive reading lists and cross-references to the most common illustrated encyclopedias, the Activity Book contains comprehension questions, sample narrations, maps, coloring pages, and activities for each chapter in The Story of the World. Children and parent-teachers love the activities, which range from coloring pages and games to mummifying a chicken!

Attempts to Include All Significant Historical and Cultural Accounts
Note: Please do not consider this series a Providential view of history which recognizes God's hand in history. It is first and foremost a history text that attempts to include all significant historical and cultural accounts. If you are a conservative Christian, you may want to opt out of a couple of activities. And where you find details with Biblical references that are inaccurate because of sparseness, use this opportunity to interject more of His story. Bible history is best taught with a Bible so we encourage your family to read through the Bible every year. These are very minor issues that are easily addressed and shouldn't keep you from this overall excellent program.

Story of the World Series are great! August 23, 2010
    Reviewer: Alicia
Story of the World Series are great! My kids love them because they tell, well, stories. It's a great way to teach kids history in a 'Charlotte Mason' kind of way. The only thing I didn't like about this book is it seemed to kind of skip around a bit. Like one day we'd be reading about Egypt, then the next day we'd read about China, then back to Egypt the next day. That was a little different, but other than that....it's a great history book!

    Disappointed April 7, 2010
Reviewer: Deb from Florida, United States
If you want to teach history from a Christian perspective, this book is NOT for you. It starts out telling the first people were nomads and that they evolved into farmers. This is not Biblical teaching as the Bible tells us that the first man ever born was a farmer. Bauer also teaches that men spread out over the earth because they were nomads. There is no mention of God dispersing men at the tower of Babel by confusing their language. This book also shares ancient stories that mimic Bible stories and places them before the Bible story potentially leaving one wondering if the Bible was plagiarized. The author explains the exodus as a sign that Egypt was growing weak and gives no glory to God for their escape. This book has the potential to cast doubts and leave confusion about ones faith in many areas, making it a poor choice for someone who is a Christian.

The Story of the World April 5, 2010
    Reviewer: Stensaas from Uganda
"History is my favorite," proclaimed my 7 year old last week.  Two of my children are using The Story of the World I this year, yet the other children manage to gravitate to the living room with their penmanship or worksheets so that they can hear the stories, too.  The Activity Book is a great asset in providing review questions and numerous activities to choose from.  Studying history was never this exciting for me when I was in school.  My children would work in this book all day if allowed to.

Our children really enjoy listening to these history lessons.  They are short, but informative.  It is perfect for our K and 1st graders.

Just one more chapter, please! July 23, 2009
Reviewer: Lisa R. from Las Vegas, NV
These volumes have been a pleasure to read for both student and parent. Not belabored with lots of dates, the information is presented much as a story (thus the title) and keeps the reader's attention. In fact, we've actually had our children ask for "just one more chapter, please!" Rather than following the history of a people from start to finish or present day, the information is presented by time period so that the reader has a sense of which events were happening concurrently and how they may have influenced each other.
