Timberdoodle's review Learn more

Eighth graders and students not quite ready for Algebra 1 will enjoy the conversational tone to this book; no other math book we have seen has been this user-friendly. Pearl went from tolerating math to actually enjoying it!

The 600-page Pre-Algebra Teaching Textbook will provide a wonderful foundation for any child. The computer CD-ROMs (available separately, or purchase the complete set and save!) adds approximately 116 hours of multimedia help, perfect for the independent learner.

About Teaching Textbooks
A number of years ago we did the unthinkable and took a poke at a sacred cow when we said that we didn't like the conventional big-name home school math programs. Though some families were steadfast in their defense, there has since been an increasing number of families who have come to realize that math programs originally designed to be used in government schools are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of home educators.

What is wrong with adapting a school-based text for home use? There are a couple of significant issues with doing that. First, because a typical school text assumes a knowledgeable math teacher, the explanations are often meager and brief. If you double as a math teacher, this will present no problem to you. However, many parents either did not take upper level math as a teen, or if they did, the process is just a distant, unpleasant memory. So sparse explanations in typical texts can be frustrating to both child and parent. Second, government schools' math texts often contain excessive use of terminology, making simple ideas seem complex.

However, the Teaching Textbooks series is written with home educators in mind so it tackles those issues head-on in a rather innovative way, by combining a teacher and a textbook into one. Firstly, their textbooks, since they were designed specifically for independent learners, contain far more explanation than any others on the market, and the tone is friendly and conversational. Because the Teaching Textbooks series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests. The textbook also comes with an answer key and a test bank.

Secondly, and ultimately what sold me on this program, are their computer CDs with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia solutions for every problem in the book, plus an additional CD-ROM with complete step-by-step solutions for every test problem. The lectures - one for each lesson in the textbook - provide hours of instruction. They cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook, but many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. (Note that you'll still need the textbook, because it has all the homework assignments and the answer key). This is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction.

The Teaching Textbooks series has been field-tested with outstanding results. Like other quality math programs, Teaching Textbooks uses the review method because it is a proven method for insuring children are able to master difficult subjects such as algebra and geometry. Students using Teaching Textbooks are fully prepared for College Board examinations and college courses. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program?

Your kids can learn that stuff without you! December 18, 2008
Reviewer: Marcene L. from Rochester, NY
If math intimidates you, and the idea of teaching the higher levels has you re-thinking homeschooling high school, you can re-think THAT thought.  Your kids can learn that stuff without you (and you can go through it at night to catch up with them!).

By far the best math curriculum I have ever used! October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Lavinia D. from Rio Rancho, New Mexico
Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra is a wonderful curriculum. It thoroughly explains all the problems and has a step by step solutions CD if your student needs more help. It is a little pricey but well worth it and you can reuse it for other students. I have homeschooled for eleven years, and this is by far the best Math curriculum I have ever used.

From struggling to successful! October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Jeanie M. from Hayden, Idaho
Timberdoodle recommended this product and I decided to try it.  One of my children struggled in Math and everyday was a heartache as she worked through her problems and just didn't seem to get it.  Having changing to Teaching Textbook, she has completed Pre Algebra and has begun Algebra 1.  She is so proud to get her assignments and tests correct.  She is almost completely self teaching and enjoys the CDS.  The only reason she isn't completely on her own is that I want to check up on her and make sure it is really working.  Great Product!

Helpful to my whole family October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Susan D. from Milwaukie OR
This product is easy to use and does a great job in explaining the lesson to the student.  The student can work independently.  That is helpful to my whole family. I will definitely purchase more for my other children.  My only suggestion would be to ofter more of the same product for younger children!

Son: "Sooo much better than the tutor..." October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Lorene T. from Kalamazoo, MI
I have been getting your catalog for years & years and in S.W. Michigan...we all agree that what you recommend is right on target!  I am also not a Saxon fan but have successfully used Miquon Math, Keys To (all of them) and Developmental Math...but we love the Teaching Textbooks!  We have Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and Geometry.  Pre-Algebra is a wonderful review of all the math you need to know before Algebra.  Last year I had a math tutor for my three oldest children...but I found they had many holes.  This is clearing up the holes!  Two of my children are using the Pre-Algebra right now.  My daughter prefers to use the book and my son like to watch the lectures on the CD's.  They watch or read the lecture then answer the a, b, c, d & e questions.  If they get them all right...they skip the problems and go onto the next chapter.  They are wizzing through and are doing excellent on the tests.  Great, Great product!  My oldest son is doing the Teaching Textbook Geometry.  He is doing excellent.  I got it in September and he will be done with it by Christmas...then he said he wants to do the Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2 and Teaching Textbooks Pre-Calculus this year too!  (We will see if that is able to really happen or not!)  But what that means is he really really likes it.  He described the TT Geometry to a friend the other day and he said he likes it sooo much better than the tutor...he can work at his own pace.  He likes to work independently.  If he doesn't understand something, he can watch the lecture again and/or put in the answer CD to see how to accurately do a problem he missed.    I need MORE Teaching Textbooks in other subjects!  Thanks for working so hard for all us to find the best of the best products.  You make our job as homeschoolers so much easier with your right on the money products and detailed reviews!
