About Teaching Textbooks

Designed for Homeschoolers
A number of years ago we did the unthinkable and took a poke at a sacred cow when we said that we didn't like the conventional big-name home school math programs. Though some families were steadfast in their defense, there has since been an increasing number of families who have come to realize that math programs originally designed to be used in government schools are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of home educators.

You Don't Have to be a Math Teacher!
What is wrong with adapting a school-based text for home use? There are a couple of significant issues with doing that. First, because a typical school text assumes a knowledgeable math teacher, the explanations are often meager and brief. If you double as a math teacher, this will present no problem to you. However, many parents either did not take upper level math as a teen, or if they did, the process is just a distant, unpleasant memory. So sparse explanations in typical texts can be frustrating to both child and parent. Second, government schools' math texts often contain excessive use of terminology, making simple ideas seem complex.

Combines a Teacher and a Textbook into One!
However, the Teaching Textbooks series is written with home educators in mind so it tackles those issues head-on in a rather innovative way, by combining a teacher and a textbook into one. Firstly, their textbooks, since they were designed specifically for independent learners, contain far more explanation than any others on the market, and the tone is friendly and conversational. Because the Teaching Textbooks series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests. The textbook also comes with an answer key and a test bank.

Step-By-Step Multimedia Explanations
Secondly, and ultimately what sold me on this program, are their computer CDs with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia solutions for every problem in the book, plus an additional CD-ROM with complete step-by-step solutions for every test problem. The lectures - one for each lesson in the textbook - provide hours of instruction. They cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook, but many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. (Note that you'll still need the textbook, because it has all the homework assignments and the answer key). This is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction.

Review Method
The Teaching Textbooks series has been field-tested with outstanding results. Like other quality math programs, Teaching Textbooks uses the review method because it is a proven method for insuring children are able to master difficult subjects such as algebra and geometry. Students using Teaching Textbooks are fully prepared for College Board examinations and college courses. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program?

A math instructor comes with the book! November 8, 2010
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from AZ United States
I love Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra!  A dignified, gentle teacher carefully explains each lesson. If my daughter got any wrong or needs review, there is a solution CD that will show her exactly how to do each problem. There is a lot of review built in to the program.  TT has greatly freed up my time as the teacher (which helps since I have several children).  The only downside to Teaching Textbook Pre-Algebra is that we were used to the lower levels that are more computer interactive with an automatic gradebook.   This one requires manual grading so there is a delay in knowing if a solution is correct or not.   I called Teaching Textbooks and they said they are working on converting their entire line to be like Math 3-7.  That will make it perfect.  It is expensive, but I feel you get what you pay for.  It far surpasses a regular textbook.  It also holds incredibly high resale value on places like eBay.  I highly recommend it!

We love it! March 3, 2010
Reviewer: Beth from Great Barrington, MA
This product came in my daughters 8th grade curriculum. We love it. She has been able to learn the new concepts as well as become much more confident in the past learned ones. I don't have to do any teaching with her. Only one lesson has had any confusion for her. I am so happy with this curriculum and it  has been wonderful for my daughter.

Never had so much fun with math February 24, 2010
Reviewer: Bethany (13) from Louisville KY
I Love Teaching Textbooks! I have only been doing it for a few weeks now and its great! I like to do school on my own with SOS and the one thing I was having real trouble with was math. It didn't help me too much because they weren't explaining it to me by someone actually speaking and showing you how to do it. This does. You can chose whether you want to watch the lesson or read it, or do both. In the video which is on CD you get to watch a screen that looks like a textbook. The guy teaching talks in a way that makes you think its just a friend talking to you. He shows how you would do a problem and explains it. Then after the lesson you do the problems in the actual Textbook (you can even doodle a little because they have some funny drawings in it). After you do the problems you grade your answers. I have never had so much fun with math, it makes me think math is even fun!

Looks forward to math every day now February 18, 2010
    Reviewer: Tedijo from Mesa AZ
Throughout my 20+ years of homeschooling, I have used six different math programs including Saxon, Math-U-See and a specialized curriculum for LD students. We began using Teaching Textbooks math 2 years ago. It has eliminated the need for outside tutoring. Gone is the frustration and the tears. Gone are the hours I used to have to spend grading math papers! The Teaching Textbooks program uses CD-Roms. Every lesson is 'taught' by a teacher explaining the lesson and illustrating the concepts on 'notebook paper' on the computer. The student then works the problems. If he gets a problem wrong twice then a step by step solution will show up on the screen to help the student figure out where he went wrong. Can you grasp how WONDERFUL this tool is for the higher levels of math?!!! When the problems are answered on the computer, there is automated grading. That, in and of itself, is worth the price of the program for me. Also nice is the ability to re-use the curriculum for your other children. We don't even use the paper textbook, but if your student does, it can be re-ordered for your next student, and the CD's re-used. I recently called Teaching Textbooks and was told that if your student still is struggling with a problem after seeing the solution, you may call them with the curriculum being used and problem number and they will have their tutor call your student! A great help for the more advanced math courses, for sure. This math program has really helped boost my son's confidence. It explains concepts clearly and concisely. He looks forward to math every day now.

Best math course we've used February 19, 2009
Reviewer: Carol Stack from Riverside, CA United States
We've used a number of math courses, and this is my favorite. My children are doing great.

The things I like are that each lesson is easy to understand, there are no workbooks that have to be purchased for each child, there is review for new concepts in the following problem sets, and each lesson can be watched on your computer if the student needs help understanding the subject (if the parent does not have time to explain it, or if the parent is not familiar with the topic).

The initial expense is kind of high, but if you have a number of children who will use it, then the cost is very reasonable per child.
