Math 6: Another Superb Math Program
Yet another superb math program designed specifically for homeschoolers, Teaching Textbooks Math 6 includes a 623-page consumable workbook, a print answer booklet, and four CD-ROMs that contain step-by-step audiovisual solutions to every one of the thousands of homework and test problems.

Topics Covered
The program has a total of 116 lessons and 19 quizzes. It covers all the topics normally found in sixth-grade school texts including fractions, decimals, percents, simple geometry, units of measure, probability, bar and circle graphs, and equation-solving. Math 6 also has a digital gradebook that grades answers as soon as they are entered and calculates percentages for each assignment. As Teaching Textbooks' focus shifts to meet the needs of younger children, this program just gets better and better. Currently, Math 6 is only available for Windows.

About Teaching Textbooks

Designed for Homeschoolers
A number of years ago we did the unthinkable and took a poke at a sacred cow when we said that we didn't like the conventional big-name home school math programs. Though some families were steadfast in their defense, there has since been an increasing number of families who have come to realize that math programs originally designed to be used in government schools are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of home educators.

You Don't Have to be a Math Teacher!
What is wrong with adapting a school-based text for home use? There are a couple of significant issues with doing that. First, because a typical school text assumes a knowledgeable math teacher, the explanations are often meager and brief. If you double as a math teacher, this will present no problem to you. However, many parents either did not take upper level math as a teen, or if they did, the process is just a distant, unpleasant memory. So sparse explanations in typical texts can be frustrating to both child and parent. Second, government schools' math texts often contain excessive use of terminology, making simple ideas seem complex.

Combines a Teacher and a Textbook into One!
However, the Teaching Textbooks series is written with home educators in mind so it tackles those issues head-on in a rather innovative way, by combining a teacher and a textbook into one. Firstly, their textbooks, since they were designed specifically for independent learners, contain far more explanation than any others on the market, and the tone is friendly and conversational. Because the Teaching Textbooks series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests. The textbook also comes with an answer key and a test bank.

Step-By-Step Multimedia Explanations
Secondly, and ultimately what sold me on this program, are their computer CDs with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia solutions for every problem in the book, plus an additional CD-ROM with complete step-by-step solutions for every test problem. The lectures - one for each lesson in the textbook - provide hours of instruction. They cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook, but many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. (Note that you'll still need the textbook, because it has all the homework assignments and the answer key). This is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction.

Review Method
The Teaching Textbooks series has been field-tested with outstanding results. Like other quality math programs, Teaching Textbooks uses the review method because it is a proven method for insuring children are able to master difficult subjects such as algebra and geometry. Students using Teaching Textbooks are fully prepared for College Board examinations and college courses. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program?

I wish I'd had this for my older children February 18, 2010
Reviewer: Beth from Heath OH - mother of 6
We love this math program. My 4th and 6th graders are enjoying math, while becoming more confident and independent learners. The constant review really helps cement skills, too. We've used Scott-Foresman, k12 online curriculum, and Saxon before this. Nobody wants to think about changing any time soon. It's a great help to busy parents to have sound and thorough explanations written into every lesson. I wish I'd had this for my older children.

From hating math to loving it!!!! February 18, 2010
Reviewer: Kathy Meyers from River Falls, WI United States
Math was our daugther's least favorite subject. We had general problems with focus, organization, neatness, following directions etc. TT kept everything together; gave her immediate feedback with answers and how to accurately solve the problem. She now asks me, "Do you think I could do 2 math lessons today?" I can use the grade book to see if she follows the directions I gave her to #1 Use paper and pencil to write her answers. If she gets it wrong #2 check that the problem was written correctly #3 rework the problem #4 (if still wrong) view the solution. Checking her math notebook and the grade book on the program tells me if she followed directions. She averages 20/22 questions correct on EVERY lesson. What a huge improvement and a great boost for her esteem. She also loves the little characters that talk to her and encourage her with each problem. TT keeps her on task and helps her stay focused.

I love the built in grading system... April 9, 2009
Reviewer: Jeanine P. from Loganville, GA
Every year math has been a struggle for my 12 year old daughter.  We had been using Math-U-See for three years and each year I had high hopes that it would get better but we often ended up in tears and math was not a happy time! Over the summer we tried Teaching Textbooks online for free using a sample and my daughter loved it!  She would ask me if she could do math and would then skip happily over to the computer!  We purchased the 6th grade Teaching Textbooks in the fall and she has been doing wonderful this year.  I love the built in grading system, the second chance on every wrong answer and the thorough but simple teaching.  We both love math this year! What a blessing Teaching Textbooks has been for our family. I will be purchasing the program again next year.

"Mom, I am so glad I don't have to do math alone!" April 9, 2009
Reviewer: Debi C. from Castle Rock, CO
My son David is using Teaching Textbooks for the first time this year.  He was so excited the first week.  "Mom, I am so glad I don't have to do math alone!" he exclaimed.  I love being able to view his progress at a quick glance and see how he is doing.  My younger children who use this curriculum regularly want me to come to the computer to view the cute little creature doing a dance to celebrate their progress.  My daughter who has struggled with math for quite awhile is excelling with this program.  After using most of the math curriculum available, I am finally happy and content to stay with Teaching Textbooks.

The instruction is so clear... April 9, 2009
    Reviewer: Laurie D. from Olalla,WA
My daughter and I are so happy with A Teaching Text Book. She now even asks if she can do math. The instruction is so clear she can do math on her own. It's like having a full time math teacher in the home. She also likes the story problems, which in the past she dreaded. They are colorful and funny, which appeals to her. It has entirely change our attitude about teaching and learning math, for the good.
