Timberdoodle's review

Topics covered include operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, simple geometry concepts, units of measure, and percents.

Designed for the typical fifth grader or an academically advanced fourth grader, this extraordinary math program includes a user-friendly consumable workbook, a helpful answer booklet, and four comprehensive CD-ROMs that contain step-by-step audiovisual solutions to every one of the thousands of homework and test problems.

Math 5 also has a digital gradebook that grades answers as soon as they are entered and calculates percentages for each assignment. Brilliant! Workbook is 617 pages, while CD-ROMs include over 100 hours of instruction.

About Teaching Textbooks: A number of years ago we did the unthinkable and took a poke at a sacred cow when we said that we didn't like the conventional big-name home school math programs. Though some families were steadfast in their defense, there has since been an increasing number of families who have come to realize that math programs originally designed to be used in government schools are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of home educators.

What is wrong with adapting a school-based text for home use? There are a couple of significant issues with doing that. First, because a typical school text assumes a knowledgeable math teacher, the explanations are often meager and brief. If you double as a math teacher, this will present no problem to you. However, many parents either did not take upper level math as a teen, or if they did, the process is just a distant, unpleasant memory. So sparse explanations in typical texts can be frustrating to both child and parent. Second, government schools' math texts often contain excessive use of terminology, making simple ideas seem complex.

However, the Teaching Textbooks series is written with home educators in mind so it tackles those issues head-on in a rather innovative way, by combining a teacher and a textbook into one. Firstly, their textbooks, since they were designed specifically for independent learners, contain far more explanation than any others on the market, and the tone is friendly and conversational. Because the Teaching Textbooks series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests. The textbook also comes with an answer key and a test bank.

Secondly, and ultimately what sold me on this program, are their computer CDs with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia solutions for every problem in the book, plus an additional CD-ROM with complete step-by-step solutions for every test problem. The lectures - one for each lesson in the textbook - provide hours of instruction. They cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook, but many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. (Note that you'll still need the textbook, because it has all the homework assignments and the answer key). This is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction.

The Teaching Textbooks series has been field-tested with outstanding results. Like other quality math programs, Teaching Textbooks uses the review method because it is a proven method for insuring children are able to master difficult subjects such as algebra and geometry. Students using Teaching Textbooks are fully prepared for College Board examinations and college courses. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program?

Undeniably the best choice February 26, 2009
Reviewer: Tacy Rutherford from Reading, PA United States
I finally had to admit I was exhausted.  I was trying to homeschool four children with toddler twins and a new baby on the way.  Each day I felt like we were barely getting through the basics of language arts and math.  Each child required individual instruction which could take up to an hour each.  By the time you added in all the regular household responsibilities, I was stretched thin.  When I found Teaching Textbooks, even the price wasn't enough to scare me off.  This one purchase alone could save me on average three hours of instruction and another hour of grading per day.  We purchased all available levels for our kids.  Now their math is improving and the kids actually look forward to completing their lessons!  They are thrilled with the instant feedback and I appreciate the automatic gradebook and the instant breakdown of whether or not they are watching the solution after missing a problem.  We're hooked and I don't see us ever using a different math program.

My son now has someone to show him each step November 5, 2008
Reviewer: Cori R. from Nampa, ID
My son asks if he can keep doing more math--he likes it that much!  I love that he has someone to show him step-by-step how to come up with the answer. I am not a math person myself, so it isn't always easy for me to get the light to come on for him.  We are very happy with it.

Good for keeping a young boy's attention! October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Ann G. from Humble, TX
We have used Teaching Textbooks Level 5 this year and C. is loving it!  The lessons are short and interactive - good for keeping a young boy's attention.  The problem sets are 22 questions from a variety of skills that are being learned so it is not an overwhelming amount of work and immediate feedback is supplied.  C.'s favorite part is the cute but unobtrusive animations that appear when a question is answered correctly.  To complete the animation, e.g. building a robot takes several problems to accomplish so he is motivated to keep working to meet a goal.  Mom's favorite part is that it is self-grading and provides solutions with audio-visual explanations for all problems so that the student can review and understand why he missed a problem.

We've used 5 different Teaching Textbooks October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Diana S. from Whittier, CA
Our family has used 5 different levels of Teaching Textbooks and my children have loved every one of them.  Not all of my children have found math easy, so when they were enthusiastic about Teaching Textbooks, I knew we had found a product that would work for our family. The explanations of the lessons are very clear and easy to understand, and the kids can do most of the work on their own, freeing me to help another child.  Even though the curriculum is a bit pricey initially, it can be reused by younger siblings, making the cost per child more reasonable.

Helpful to my whole family October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Susan D. from Milwaukie OR
This product is easy to use and does a great job in explaining the lesson to the student.  The student can work independently.  That is helpful to my whole family. I will definitely purchase more for my other children.  My only suggestion would be to ofter more of the same product for younger children!
