So far, so good. . . |

As with most homeschool families, it's a big decision to invest in a curriculum choice like Teaching Textbooks (especially since we already have Saxon texts for almost all grades.)
However, we took the plunge. . . and so far are very pleased with Teaching Textbooks Algebra. We needed more explanation, more teaching. . . I used Saxon in high school and the same things that frustrated me as a student frustrate my children (and me as a parent!) The younger children still use lots of manipulatives, games, mental math play and Saxon, but starting with the oldest we're using Teaching Textbooks for Algebra and beyond.

This is a great program. The teacher actually talks the child through the problems and shows them how to work the problems in a way that they can understand.

Teaching Textbook beats other programs hands down! |

Before TT we used Saxon math with the help of the Dive CD's. Though that was an excellent combo, TT beats it hands down. I've had three of my children use it and have passed it on to a struggling friend who is no longer struggling. With my last child, we got to lesson sixtyish and started over. The problem was the child, and not TT. My child had failed to follow the very important rules I gave her: She was to listen to the lesson, pause the cd to work each practice problem before listening to the solution, work the homework problems, rework wrong answers, if they still came back wrong she was to go listen to the teacher work that exact problem. For wrong test answers she was to go listen to the teacher work that exact problem. When she started the program over and followed the rules, she sailed through it.

I have recommended the Teaching Textbooks math program to many of the ladies in my homeschool group. Those who have switched agree that it is a "Godsend."

Not good for my daughter |

The explanations in this program were good but my daughter needed more problems from the lesson she just studied and less review. For her, there was not enough time spent working on and learning the new information for her to really understand it. She would get confused and we wasted a lot of time in looking for the lesson explaining the problem she was having trouble with and then picking out those problems from the various lesson problem sets. She is the type of math learner that needs at least 20 problems on the new concept to retain it, but once she has it in her brain, she doesn't forget it and therefore doesn't need as much review. If your student is like her, this program doesn't work well. For someone who learns things quickly and only needs a few problems to to to retain the concepts, it is great.
