We saw it with Joy, who at 6 was reading at a level twice her age. But for Joy, a visual learner, the procedure had been an easy, almost effortless process. When we tried to use the same methods with Hope, we discovered two things: Hope is not a visual learner and we really had no method to teach reading! So with Hope we had to start from scratch. We found ourselves bouncing from one method to another, scatterbrained, but too poor to put out the megabucks needed for any of the flashier programs. And as you might expect, we didn't make a lot of progress. Then we stumbled across this book! What a need it met. Phonics-based, easy to follow, inexpensive, nonconsumable, and self-contained, it was all that we were looking for. There are no workbooks, no flashcards, nothing fancy—just you, one-on-one with your child for 20 minutes a day. Based on the nationally successful DISTAR program, this program has been adapted for parent and child use, and seems custom-made for the home school setting. Yes, this method does use visual clues in the first 80 lessons, but then they drop the clues and your child takes off running. We were doubtful at first, but after going through it with four children and hearing hundreds of “success” stories, we're believers! After 100 lessons your child will be reading at a solid 2nd grade level. My only complaint involves the stories. There is a new story every lesson, starting at lesson 13, and they are too silly for my tastes. But they were the highlights for all our children, so I won't complain too loudly! Hope, after 50 lessons, was reading smoothly, writing short “stories,” and on her own picked up and read other "easy" books. She completed the book before her 5th birthday and effortlessly moved into a 3rd grade reading text. Grace also finished the program while still 4, though there were days that we more than exceeded the 20 minutes prescribed. Loved this book! January 18, 2010 Reviewer: Janet from St Petersburg, FL United States   I heard about this book from my sister who had used it with her children.  I used it with my two youngest sons when they were about 3.  I remember I was almost in tears, when my middle son read a stop sign.  With my youngest, we got through most of it, but it gave him the tools he needed to be a solid reader.  He is a bookworm, even now at 16.  My sister did use it with her kids at around 2 1/2.   Our kids were early talkers so maybe a rule of thumb would be to use as soon as they start developing language skills. This book worked wonderfully for my boys. One does need to read the parent instruction carefully, I read it more than once to make sure I followed the program (being the stick-to-the rules accountant that I am).  The only regret is that I did not have this book to use with my oldest son, he learned to read by 4 but he does not have the same enjoyment of reading as my youngest two. They are very different in their learning styles, but this book has been the one I used to teach them both to read.  After completion of the 100 lessons, they were both excited about reading and confident. My son wouldn't be reading now without this book February 20, 2009 Reviewer: Anonymous person from Windsor, PA United States   My son had a very difficult time learning to read.  We tried everything and nothing worked.  Thinking we were going to have to hire a professional or send him to school we bought this book as our last effort and to my surprise it worked.  He picked up on the lessons and loved the short stories.  I handmade flashcards to go with the book and made small storybooks as well so he felt he was reading "real" books.  It took him two years (first & second grade) to finish the book.  He is now in the fourth grade and reading at a seventh grade reading level!  This book saved our homeschool. My kids & tutored students all learned so much! February 19, 2009 Reviewer: Stephanie Orsini from FL United States   I've been a homeschooler for 10 years and I also worked as a tutor. My children developed their early reading skills with this simple book and my tutoring "victims" as I called them also improved. (The trick is to read the directions well and follow them!) I have purchased at least 10-12 for others!! November 5, 2008 Reviewer: Verena S. from Mississippi   My child has a diagnosis of severe ADHD and learning to read was a breeze using "TEACH YOUR CHILD TO READ IN 100 EASY LESSONS."  His learning disorder was difficult to diagnose because of his reading skills.
