Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
If you can give your child a thirst for reading, the whole world opens to him. We saw it with Joy, who at 6 was reading at a level twice her age. But for Joy, a visual learner, the procedure had been an easy, almost effortless process. When we tried to use the same methods with Hope, we discovered two things: Hope is not a visual learner and we really had no method to teach reading! So with Hope we had to start from scratch. We found ourselves bouncing from one method to another, scatterbrained, but too poor to put out the megabucks needed for any of the flashier programs. And as you might expect, we didn't make a lot of progress. Then we stumbled across this book! What a need it met.

Phonics-based, easy to follow, inexpensive, nonconsumable, and self-contained, it was all that we were looking for. There are no workbooks, no flashcards, nothing fancy—just you, one-on-one with your child for 20 minutes a day.

Based on the nationally successful DISTAR program, this program has been adapted for parent and child use, and seems custom-made for the home school setting. Yes, this method does use visual clues in the first 80 lessons, but then they drop the clues and your child takes off running. We were doubtful at first, but after going through it with four children and hearing hundreds of “success” stories, we're believers! After 100 lessons your child will be reading at a solid 2nd grade level.

My only complaint involves the stories. There is a new story every lesson, starting at lesson 13, and they are too silly for my tastes. But they were the highlights for all our children, so I won't complain too loudly! Hope, after 50 lessons, was reading smoothly, writing short “stories,” and on her own picked up and read other "easy" books. She completed the book before her 5th birthday and effortlessly moved into a 3rd grade reading text. Grace also finished the program while still 4, though there were days that we more than exceeded the 20 minutes prescribed. (Auditory learners must be the most time consuming learners—they seem to need to talk about every step of the process!!).
Inexpensive, non-consumable, and self-contained!

Wonderfully Easy June 22, 2014

My 3 year old son and I are on lesson 12. He loves it and doesn't want to do it at the same time, but the method is wonderful and even though he doesn't think he can do it he already is. He already has a little reading vocabulary of 10 or so words and is building the skills that will develop into a lifetime of reading.

Love this!  I taught kindergarten for three years and never worried about teaching my own kids to read-- until my oldest dug his feet in and refused to try.  I backed off and we started this program when he reached first grade.  At first he still dreaded it, but by the time the stories were introduced reading became his favorite subject!  He asks to do it first and can't wait till the end of each lesson to see if any of the new letters will be used in the story.  Lessons are short and quick and the advise for praise is golden!

Excellent reading program! June 1, 2012
Reviewer: Mom to 14
I have used this book to teach 9 children to read over the past 15 years. It has been well-loved and highly successful for each one of them! I usually use it when my children are 4 or 5, but have used it as early as 3 and as late as 10 and 13 (with my children who were adopted at those ages, unable to read). Each of the children has enjoyed the stories, has learned to read with pleasure, and has transitioned easily to regular print. The children who have used this at ages 4-5 are reading easily at the 4-6th grade reading level by age 7 or so, and all the children who learned young have become voracious readers. I can't recommend this highly enough, for all ages and all levels of natural ability.

Very good October 11, 2011

I purchased this book for my 4 year old to learn the read, because my mom used this same book with me and my siblings. It took her a little bit to like it, but now she looks forward to the lessons. We also do a rewards system where every 20 lessons or so she gets a "prize" which makes it something to look forward too.

100 Easy Lessons is the BEST October 3, 2011
Reviewer: I. B. from Dousman, WI United States
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons proved 100% successful in teaching my six children to read to a 2nd grade level.  The program's ease of use lies in its symbols (which slowly 'disappear' by the last lessons), scripted text for parents, and pictures with questions to reinforce understanding of each lesson's story.  It was really simple to use, and I liked not having to deal with flash cards, or extra drilling found in some other programs. 100 Lessons is great for any learning style.  My youngest child was having the hardest time completing the lessons with me, and I just jumped back until I knew they would be successful.  They just needed a little more review.  I really trusted the program's soundness as I had used it five times already.  Plus, early on, this program proves to parent and child, that if one is faithful in the little things (doing a lesson every day), one can reap great rewards.  Honestly, I have recommended this to every homeschooling friend I know.
