Timberdoodle's review

Who hasn't heard of Sudoku? I have read that there are Sudoku clubs, strategy books, videos, mobile phone games, card games, competitions and even a Sudoku game show. The immense surge in popularity of Sudoku internationally has led to it being named the "fastest growing puzzle in the world".

A Sudoku Puzzle consists of a grid of 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by darker lines into nine 3X3 square blocks. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. The task is to fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9.

The attraction of the puzzle is that you play against yourself, the rules are simple, and yet completing the puzzle does require logical ability. Sudoku is being recommended by teachers as a good cerebral workout in logical reasoning, teaching children to work out strategies for problems they have not seen before. It has even been suggested that it can slow the progression of conditions such as Alzheimer's.

After solving a number of Sudoku puzzles, it dawned on us that the numerals in Sudoku puzzles are merely used for convenience; arithmetic relationships between numerals are not important. Realizing that any set of distinct symbols will do - letters, shapes, or colors - it occurred to us that by limiting Sudoku to a paper and pencil numerals puzzle, we were ignoring those who could be particularly enriched by learning to master this very commonsense puzzle, younger children. Many children who lack the fine motor skills to write in a book, could still have the ability to master the concepts of Sudoku, if we could somehow make it accessible via a manipulative.

With that in mind, we spent months researching various options until a sales rep, hearing of our quest, sent us this product. Sudoku Board is not only ideal for a child who lacks writing skills, or a child who thinks better by manipulating his hands, but we were delighted to discover that our small colorful manipulative fits perfectly into the recessed panels.

So here it is, a nicely done Sudoku Board(10 1/4 X 15 3/8) for older children and adults who prefer a manipulative to endless erasing in a book. Plus, we have included 90 colorful counters for your younger children.

Utilizing the colored counters in place of the numbers on the Sudoku Board makes the game accessible to younger children, and it's easy to do!

To prepare the game, simply line up a different colored counter behind each of the numbers 1-9 on the back of the board. This will designate what color to use in place of each numeral when arranging the puzzle.

Then select one of the puzzle solutions from the back of the book included with the Sudoku Board, or a solution from any other Sudoku resource. Simply place the appropriate colored counters in place of the numerals they represent according to the solution's layout. Finally, remove an appropriate number of pieces to set up the game for the child. For a very young child, try removing only one piece from every row. (Next time, remove one from each column or 3 x 3 box.) Then show the child how play by the normal rules, figuring out which of the nine different colors is missing until it is all filled back in.

Using the Sudoku Board this way, you'll find that even very young children will be able to challenge their minds with this resource!

Free Sudoku puzzles appear daily in newspapers and on the Internet. You should never lack for fresh material and you can expect to see marked improvement in your child's ability to solve these logic puzzles through regular practice.

Please Note: due to some very small pieces, this teaching tool could pose a hazard to children under 3 years of age, or any child prone to putting things in his mouth.

    Excellent manipulative February 23, 2009
Reviewer: Household from Rochester, NY United States
This set helps introduce children to the logic of Sudoku.  The colors make it less intimidating than the numbers.  My six-year old and his Co-op classmates love it!  You can start out with just a few spaces empty to help kids get the hang of it, and then introduce harder and harder puzzles.  The only challenge is the time it takes to set it up!

    Beautiful game October 17, 2008
Reviewer: LAURA M. from TACOMA, WA United States
As well as being a great learning game I really appreciate the quality of this game. The wooden board and markers are just beautiful. I feel the children respect it more than the all plastic and paper pieces in most contemporary games.
The size of the markers are a real concern for younger children so do pay attention to the notice in the description of this game.
We bring this out while the little ones are napping or have gone to bed to make this game even more special.
