Statue of Liberty 3D Model
The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by the people of France as a symbol of the friendship that was established during the American Revolution. The statue was designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and became a joint project, with the United States being responsible for construction of the pedestal while the French were responsible for construction of the actual statue and assembly on the base. While the statue was originally to be completed in 1876, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence, financing constraints delayed the official commemoration until October 28, 1886.
The Statue of Liberty stands 305' 6" tall, from the base of the pedestal to the tip of the torch. Her exterior is covered in copper; the light-green color or patina is the result of the copper's natural weathering. There are 153 steps from the pedestal to the head. Lady Liberty, as the statue is also known, holds a tablet in her left hand that is inscribed with the date July IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776), the date of the United States Declaration of Independence. Her crown contains seven rays which represent the seven continents and seven seas. Lying at the feet of the statue are the broken shackles of oppression and tyranny.
While the statue itself is no longer open to visitors, the museum and ten-story pedestal on which the statue stands remain open to visitors. Visitors are required to make reservations and obtain a “Monument Access Pass” in advance of their visit. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable structures in the United States and was, until the age of the airplane, one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants.
