Prepare Your Child
Home taught children that are not prepared for their yearly standardized tests are at a distinct disadvantage to government and privately taught children. If you reside in a state that requires standardized tests you should know that a vast majority of certified teachers 'teach for the test.' In other words, knowing the types of questions that will appear on the standardized tests, they will spend the weeks preceding the tests covering the necessary information. If you do not do likewise, your children stand a chance of performing poorly in comparison.

Essential Groundwork
For those of us in a state where some form of testing is required, but never scrutinized, preparing is not as critical. But for those of you in states where the test results are not only analyzed but are used as a basis for whether you may continue to home educate, why not make sure your children are 'playing on a level playing field?' Spectrum Test Prep offers students the essential groundwork needed to prepare for standardized tests.

Newest Version
This newest version of Spectrum Test Prep series offers children a comprehensive and sequential way to practice the content areas offered on the following standardized tests: the California Achievement TestsŪ (CAT/5), the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS/4), the Iowa Tests of Basic SkillsŪ (ITBS, Form K), the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT/7), and the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT/9). The up-to-date content reflects national standards and includes practice tests in the following subject areas: reading, language arts and math.

Clear Instructions and an Answer Key
Each book offers examples, with directions and sample test items, tips about test-taking strategies, a practice test section with actual test questions in reading, language arts and math, and a progress chart to note and record their own progress. Clear instructions and an answer key are included. Help your children to face the tests with the same confidence that their peers will have.

Special Note:
Although presently there are test preparation books that also cover science and history, there are a couple of reasons we have elected not to carry them at this time. Our main concern is that their format is more entertaining and not as nuts and bolts, nor as comprehensive about covering the main topics of reading, language arts and math as we have found in Spectrum Test Prep. Moreover, because in many states history and science are option subjects tested at the parent's discretion, it seemed more prudent to offer the best tool for preparing your child for what is essential: reading, language arts and math.

Each workbook includes:
  • Actual test questions
  • Tips for clearer writing, including combining sentences
  • Tips on test preparation
  • Strategies and techniques for answering different kinds of questions
  • Full-length practice tests
  • Complete answer key

Mixed Feelings June 18, 2013
Reviewer: Kimberlee
I'm not yet sure quite what to think of this book as neither of my children is old enough to be required by our state to take a standardized test. However, I know a few things for sure: 1. Every public school teacher I know uses this for standardized test prep in their classroom. 2. My kids love the book. They enjoy it for the fact that it's what they call a "fill in bubbles" book. Basically, they don't have to write their answers out, and they love that. (Hopefully, their enthusiasm over filling in bubbles will serve them well when they do take a standardized test.) 3. Timberdoodle's pricing on this book series is competitive. I can't find anyone to beat the price -- it's priced just about the same as everywhere else I've seen. I figure if I'm going to buy this book, I prefer to buy it from Timberdoodle so that I can support this excellent, family-oriented company. I don't know a better way to prepare for a standardized test yet, so I have to recommend this as the best resource I know.

Handy if you need it January 24, 2013
Reviewer: Stephanie
This is very helpful to have when you live in a state that requires testing. Our state does, but not at this age, so it's not really necessary for us. However, it certainly does help with knowing where your child falls in terms of where he/she should be by the end of the first grade curriculum.

Very little test prep, more a taste May 11, 2012
Reviewer: HeatherHH
Two years ago, I bought a couple of these books for my elementary age children after we moved to a state that required standardized testing. Overall, I found these book to be okay, but not great. The positives are that they are relatively inexpensive and questions within each subject are broken down into smaller categories so you can easily see what areas need improvement. As for the negatives: 1. There is really no information about test mechanics. The practice tests give you no idea of what time frame they are to be completed in. There's really no information about testing strategies (like guessing, skipping questions and coming back, etc). I also had no idea if they were the standard length of a "real test" or just a shortened sampling. And there was no explanation about how the tests are scored (percentiles and such). 2. How did he do? The mini-tests at the end of several sections tell you how many you should get right before moving on. But the full practice tests for each subject give you no idea of what number of problems would be normal for a child to miss. 3. The practice tests are not thorough. There was a section with practice questions on spelling and subject-verb agreement, and then the mini-test for those sections. But the practice test at the end of the language arts unit didn't have a single spelling or subject-verb agreement question. So, I don't think the practice tests are large enough to be representative of the "real thing." 4. There aren't enough practice questions. Each section is short, then you take the mini-test after a few sections, and then what do you do if the end result is you need to review? There are no more questions to do it with. 5. The subsections had *a lot* of questions in essay/written format considering that my children are preparing for a multiple choice test. Some subject areas were not covered in multiple choice format at all. Overall, I think the book was okay, but the only real positive was the price. There are a lot of negatives. This is more a brief check-in for a parent near the end of the year after very thoroughly working to cover all areas, an opportunity for the student to get a slight taste of what to expect. It will not help significantly with preparing for the test. The following year, I bought practice tests designed for the specific test my children were taking, and I was much happier with them.

Quite helpful in easing her worries February 18, 2010
Reviewer: Ellen from Kernersville NC - Homeschool teacher of 5
Test Prep is helping my daughter prepare for our once a year nationally standardized test that is required by the state of North Carolina for homeschools. Its 'fill in the dot' approach has allowed her to get comfortable, not only with the type of questions that will be asked, but also with the format of filling in an answer key. Third grade testing is a bit more complex than earlier grade levels - it is 'Where the rubber meets the road' in standardized tests. This resource has been quite helpful in easing her worries. The discounted prices through Timberdoodle offer an affordable way to educate during these tough economic times.
