Timberdoodle's review Video
This complete bundle includes the Sequential Spelling DVD, Sequential Spelling book and even the Sequential Spelling workbook. Having all three at your fingertips makes it easy to reference the lists your child is working on independently and offer assistance, check his work or keep a complete record. It also makes it possible for you to teach spelling yourself one day a week, getting a good sense for how they are doing without ever becoming a burden.

Sequential Spelling DVD
The most priceless commodity a homeschool mom has is time, and the longer she teaches, the more frugal she becomes with how her time is spent. While we love Sequential Spellingís scope and sequence, and find it is one of the most labor-prudent programs available, it still requires parental time to implement. Multiply that time by however many levels you are teaching, and it is no wonder that for many families the use of Sequential Spelling, or any spelling program for that matter, fizzles out by mid-year. Now it doesnít have to.

Simple to use
The DVD-ROM version of Sequential Spelling will allow your children to learn spelling on their own with minimal parental assistance. The presentation is simple and straight-forward. The DVD-ROM is loaded into your computer (not TV). As your child works through the lesson, he will first hear the word spoken clearly by itself, then in a sentence, and then spoken again. Using the spacebar on his keyboard, he pauses the video, attempts the spelling of the word, resumes the video to see the proper spelling, and checks and corrects his work.

Helps keep things simple
The Sequential Spelling word-family aspect of the program is reinforced by color-coding the on-screen words. Word families are one color; suffixes another; prefixes another; and consonant clusters yet another. Even we Sequential Spelling enthusiasts rarely take these additional steps when working solely from the books!

Goes great as a bundle!
The Sequential Spelling DVD can be used as-is, but it is recommended that the DVD be bought in a bundle with the Sequential Spelling Teacherís Book and the Student Response Book for Sequential Spelling. The teacherís book will enable you to review your childís work without having to access the computer. The teacherís books also includes some information that the DVD does not, including bolding of the most important words to be learned for competency and fluency. The student book is more optional but handy if you like to keep your childís work organized neatly.

Sequential Spelling DVD-ROM features Quicktime files and is PC, Mac, iPod and iPad compatible. This program will not play on your TV through your DVD player.

Sequential Spelling

This new edition of Sequential Spelling has been revised to be much more friendly to the home schooling parent rather than the professional teacher, making an easy-to-use program even easier to use while maintaining all the basic features weíve always liked! Read our blog post to learn more about what's changed in Sequential Spelling Version 2.

I am an atrocious speller; don't even ask what atrocious looked like before I spell-checked this copy! But I find it interesting that I am not consistently a bad speller, as I do have some strengths. When I consider those strengths, I recall not phonic rules per se, but patterns that were diligently taught by some nameless teacher in my past. Having recognized the brilliance of that methodology, I was more than eager to examine the Sequential Spelling series.

While we intuitively teach our children to read via word families (first at, then bat, cat, fat, and so forth), we rarely incorporate that same methodology in teaching spelling. Instead we shift to burdensome rules and endless lists of seemingly random words.

A different spelling program
Sequential Spelling is radically different as it is firmly entrenched in teaching using word families. The parent dictates a word, then the child writes it in his notebook. The child corrects any error right away before the next word is dictated because when he immediately corrects his own mistakes he will learn and retain more. Everyday, every lesson is a test. That's it, that's the program. Your child will never be asked to study for a spelling test; the author believes that the tests should be a learning device, not a method of evaluation.

Common Sense
This is by far the most common sense spelling program I have ever seen. If you were hoping for a book of spelling rules, you'll need to look elsewhere. The Student Response Book has blank columns for each daily test and makes this program super convenient, but the teacher's manual explains how to use notebook paper to accomplish the same thing.

For young or old students you will not regret do this program
Each level of Sequential Spelling consists of 180 days of lessons. If you find the list of 25 words too much for your child, then do fewer words a day. While Level One can be used with a first grader, it is equally effective with an older child who needs to build a solid spelling foundation. There is nothing juvenile about this program, so dive in at whatever level seems appropriate. Samples of each level are available on-line. How I wish I had used this system with my own children; it is truly the only spelling program I have seen that makes absolute sense.

Sequential Spelling eliminates the study-for-the-test-and-forget-by-Monday syndrome. Each of the 7 levels has 180 daily tests of 21 words for a total of over 25,000 words!

Important Note: Sequential Spelling is not based on grade level. The sequences are based on building from easy words to advanced words, as from all to tall, stall, install, installment, installation. However, for some of you it will be helpful to walk through the simple placement test.

Additional Note: If you opt to use the DVD in conjunction with the Student Workbook for levels 1-5, please note that because of a few later changes to the workbooks there will be an occasional discrepancy between the word lists on the DVD versus the lists in the workbook. This will not affect the spelling exercises which are the core of the program, but can impact some of the peripheral activities such as crossword puzzles.
Sequential Spelling is a seven-level spelling program for the teaching of the patterns of English spelling within seven normal public school years, though many homeschoolers complete all seven levels at a much faster rate.

Each Sequential Spelling Bundle now comes with one free Student Book! Extra copies of the student book are available separately.

Important Note: The Sequences are not based on grade level curriculum. The sequences are based on building from easy words to advanced words. as from all to tall, stall, install, installment, installation. However, for some of you it will be helpful to walk through the simple placement test.
