Body of Evidence: The Integumentary System
Skin serves to waterproof, cushion, and protect deeper tissues. In addition to numerous other vital roles, it provides Vitamin D synthesis and protects against infectious organisms. Other parts of the integumentary system include the skinís glands and appendages, such as hair and nails.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and the one we are probably most familiar with. It is right there before our eyes every day, but without the aid of a microscope we cannot really appreciate its complexity and many important functions. Our very life on this planet depends on a dead layer of epithelial cells no thicker than refrigerator shrink wrap. The connective tissue of our dermis is woven in a way to make our skin tough but elastic. Our sweat glands control our body temperature and allow us to work in hot weather. Our pigment cells protect our skin from the sunís radiation.

And wait until you see, through the technology of high magnification, the marvelous complexity of the hair follicle and hair!

Part 1: 45 minutes. Part 2: 48 Minutes

The skin is the largest organ in the body! This DVD covers the epidermis, dermis, and hypo dermis. Skins glands and appendages such as hair and nails. It goes over how our sweat glands control our body temperature and our pigment cells that protect our skin from the sun’s radiation.

The setting: Dr. Menton is sitting with two high school students at a table with his laptop….laid back lecture would be what I would call this.

It quickly got dry and boring for my 7th and 9th graders who were hoping for more “interactive material” as the 12 year old put it. They are very much Bill Nye fans.  These were more of a lecture style teaching. From an adults perspective I found this interesting, although not attention grabbing.  That said, I LOVE that it was from a Creation Worldview! There was scripture quoted throughout both sessions. The pictures they showed with the different layers of skin were intriguing.

It would have been great to have a short Q & A to go with it, like note taking, as there were a lot of vocabulary words. There is a 64 page study guide available separately. It covers the whole Body of Evidence series.
