Piano Wizard's four distinct steps will take your three- to twelve-year-old from complete novice to enthusiastic fledgling music player.

Step 1 assumes the child does not yet have a grasp of notes and the keyboard, so basically it is play-by-color. After selecting a song to play, a color-coded piano keyboard image is displayed horizontally at the top of the screen. If your child plays the right note on time, he earns points. The game graciously ignores mistakes -- no sour notes are heard. The keyboard image and the notes are color-coded, and the keys on the physical piano are similarly coded using durable, washable, and removable adhesive stickers. In addition, the speed of the notes can be adjusted so your child can start at a comfortable pace, and as he masters songs he can increase the tempo. (Tempo is not retained from song to song, so if you are adjusting it, it must be set with each new game, but that is a relatively fast and effortless task.)

In Step 2 the screen keyboard image is rotated -- displayed vertically at the left of the screen, a visual display of how music notation is written and how the hands should correspond to notes. Again, if your child plays the right note at the right time, he earns points.

Step 3 takes this further, by adding actual notes traveling horizontally on a musical staff. Though the notes and keyboard keys are still color-coded, at this stage the student essentially starts playing by reading notes. And he is even shown the finger numbering to help him learn to place his hands on the keyboard in the correct way. With each lesson and song played, Piano Wizard keeps track of a student's success rate and then lets him know how well he did by the percentage of notes hit correctly at the end.

With Step 4 the child loses the visual clues of color. The notes on the musical staff are now black, and the child plays solely by reading notes on the staff. Compared to conventional teaching methods, measurable results emerge very fast.

There is also a Free Play mode, in which you can choose your instrument's sounds, including a drum, woodwinds, a harmonica, guitars, and pianos, plus some others your child may never have heard before. In this mode, he uses the keyboard to play whatever he wishes and is not restricted to any particular song choices.

Computer Times Editors Choice Award July 31, 2009
Reviewer: Anonymous person
During our testing, adults and children (ages 4-13) were captivated by this piano learning system. All of the children and one of the adults were playing a piano keyboard for the first time in their lives.

Players, parents, and music teachers can up-load any song into the game, instantly creating a new video game experience or music lesson every time. As a musician who endured long and boring piano lessons in my youth, I was amazed at the amount of practice and determination the Piano Wizard encouraged from each of the children. Knowing the hyperactivity level and limited attention span of some of the kids added to my astonishment.

Studies show that normal attrition rates for piano lessons among the general population can approach 80 percent. If our testing is any indication of the enthusiasm that both children and adults will have learning piano using Piano Wizard, I have to believe the attrition rate will be small.

We test many products at Computer Times that perform well and earn our Editor's Choice award. Seldom, though, do we find a product that is as exciting as Piano Wizard. As an editor, educator and musician, if we had medals to award along with our Editor's Choice award, I would certainly present Piano Wizard with the gold medal. Hats off to everyone involved in its design. It doesn't get any better than this.
