Designed for Exploration; Can Even Be Used Indoors
The Carson X-Scope generated a lot of interest in our home, not for bird watching or leaf examination, but for injury inspection! With a houseful of EMTs, I guess that is to be expected. But the X-Scope is more than a nifty 30x microscope for wound assessment. This seven-function, multi-use optical pocket tool also contains an 8x telescope for spying out local wildlife, 9x fold-out magnifier to study bugs with, LED flashlight that also doubles as a directional light for viewing things when the lighting is less than perfect, signal whistle shrill enough to please children and drive moms nuts, directional compass, and digital clock. Compact, lightweight, and easy to use, pack the X-Scope for any outdoors event.

Requires the use of two "AAA" batteries (available separately).

Don't Be Disappointed:
When we first received our sample X-Scope, we were disappointed by one thing. Though touted as having a compass, one look at it in action was enough for us to be concerned. After some field testing we concluded that the compass is too easily manipulated to give it more than the faintest value. I.E., please don't use it as your only way out of the wilderness!

Can't Put It Down!
Why still sell something that doesn't measure up to our rigorous standards across the board? Honestly, we fell in love with the optics! This by far the best inexpensive option for looking at bird feathers, bug legs, sugar crystals and any of the other myriads of things your young explorers discover. Initially we refrained from even listing the compass in the list of features; so that it would be an unexpected perk and not a disappointment. Now, we just go for full disclosure and trust that anyone interested enough to wade through this comment will be prepared to enjoy their X-Scope to the fullest, with or without a compass! (In the many years we've sold it, we've only had one complaint. Possibly we expect too much!)

This is the coolest gadget September 25, 2009

Both of my sons, age 7 and 12 love this tool. It is the perfect thing for young "explorers" to take outside. Instead of packing several items -binoculars, a flashlight, a whistle, a compass, etc. they can grab the X-Scope and go. Would also be great to keep an extra one in the car for impromptu field trips.
