The Ballad of Matthew's Begats: An unlikely royal family tree

As each year passes our family grasps more and more that the whole Bible--not just the Gospels, not just the New Testament, but the entire Bible--is the story of Jesus. Even the begats. Especially the begats.

Why? Because every account of this genealogical list points to Jesus and reveals our desperate need of a Savior. If in the past you have been tempted to skip over the genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew, then The Ballad of Matthew's Begats could change that mindset forever.

Andrew Peterson, a musical wordsmith with a penchant for lively bluegrass, has put this oft-overlooked piece of scripture to song. We were so captivated by this catchy ballad that a couple years ago we enlisted Pearl and a few of her friends to kick off the Christmas pageant at the local nursing home with this song. The residents chuckled over its originality; it was the perfect opening tune. Better yet, the girls' countless hours of practice meant that the rest of the family also knew the words, to some degree. What an impact it had on our Bible read-throughs as Christ's family line was much more familiar to us. Now The Ballad of Matthew's Begats is available both as a CD single and as a children's book.

While Andrew Peterson's song is captivating and fun to sing, the imaginative illustrations by Cory Godbey help cement the endearing characters into our brains. Because it uses a format reminiscent of an ancestral album, there are snapshots for each family member and informative notes scattered throughout. This gives parents a natural opportunity to remind children of these Old Testament accounts and how they fit into the story of Jesus. Additionally, Cory's skillful humor is quickly caught by astute Bible readers.

So listen to the CD, sing along if you are so inclined, study the thoughtful illustrations, and grasp the magnificent story of Jesus that begins in Genesis, not Matthew.

Hardback, 32 pages, with a CD single of the song "The Ballad of Matthew's Begats." Ages 4-10.
Features

Andrew Peterson's love for storytelling is a vital part of his life. If he's not huddled down flipping pages for his young sons Aedan and Jesse and their little sister, Skye, then he's out on the edge of a stage, spinning tales as one of today's most prolific songwriters. Peterson invites us on yet another journey to someplace unexpected. Peterson's keen eye for lyrical detail and endearing sincerity with his listeners often draw comparisons to Rich Mullins. He contends. "My hope is that my music captures a hint of the beauty of God's story."
