Timberdoodle's review

Do you need a customized Preschool Timberdoodle Curriculum?

Are you looking for a complete homeschool curriculum for your preschooler? You'll find that Timberdoodle's Curriculum engages the hands-on learner, reaches for academic excellence, and encourages a growing love for learning. We also stress critical thinking skills and, even at this early grade, working towards independent learning. This program is designed for the two- or three-year-old who is ready for a more intentional approach to learning with an emphasis on activities and conversations rather than worksheets alone. Of course, most preschoolers are eager to have their own workbooks, too, so we've included the very best ones available to be sure you both enjoy this year!

Depending on your child's pace, you will find that this includes enough material for a relaxed two years of learning or a fast-paced one-year approach. Our suggestion? Just jump in and see how your child does. Many preschoolers will be eager to speed ahead, but if you find that your child really isn't there yet, simply slow down and enjoy this all-too-fleeting stage.

Timberdoodle's Preschool Handbook
This guide helps you to know which books to use when and how to schedule your school year. A weekly checklist is included so that you can verify at a glance that you are including a wide variety of activities in your tiny tot's routine. We don't encourage a detailed daily schedule since no two days are identical for a wee one; at this age especially, a relaxed approach is so much more appropriate!

Montessori Letter Work
In the innovative, interactive board book, Letter Work, your toddler will learn the sounds and shapes of each letter. Based on the century-old and highly successful Montessori way of teaching, chubby fingers will find these letters, with uber-fine sandpaper texture, irresistible for tracing. Visually appealing and educational in every way, each Letter Work page features basic phonetic sounds; touchable, traceable letters; and an elegantly simple illustration to provide context.
Montessori Number Work
Following the Montessori method, the interactive Montessori Number Work introduces quantities to count before teaching the numerals. Groupings of beautiful, slightly retro illustrations provide objects to count before your toddler turns the page to find the correct fine sandpaper numeral to trace with his fingers. This approach of focusing on the concrete before the abstract has been highly successful for over a century.
Montessori Map Work
The newest board book in the Montessori series, Montessori Map Work introduces preschoolers to the basics about the seven continents. Visually appealing, Montessori Map Work devotes two pages to each continent and includes some of the animals and/or birds native to that continent. There is also a textured outline of each continent for small hands to trace and suggested modes of transportation between continents for spatial context. The back cover folds out to show a simple map of the world and provide a satisfying preschool-size overview of geography.
A-Z Upper and Lower Case Puzzles
As children manipulate the three-dimensional, bright, crepe foam rubber letters in the Lauri Alphabet Puzzles, they increase visual and tactile perception, shape discrimination, and hand-eye coordination. For the youngest, think of these as fabulous perception puzzles (just think of how similar E & F, O & Q, R & P, and M & N are). At two, most toddlers are able to pick out each letter by name. Older children can match lower case and upper case, put together words, and use the puzzles for phonics games.
Big Book of Things to Spot
Usborne's Big Book of Things to Spot contains four titles in one volume, making it the book to take along on a trip when you know there will be waits or delays. This book is crammed with over 4000 things to spot on a farm, in the town, or pertaining to animals or history. While searching the colorful, beautifully illustrated pages, your preschooler will learn the names of both animals and objects. You will also discuss numbers, counting, colors, shapes, and differences. Just doing a page or two a day will enrich your child's vocabulary in a way that you both will find enjoyable.
Mathematical Reasoning - Beginning 1
Mathematical Reasoning Beginning 1 is a highlight for this age. The activities are simple, engaging, and colorful. Whether it is pointing to the group of four yellow horses or crossing off the fish eaten by the cat, this book is a perfect introduction to the basics of math. At this age, math is an interesting puzzle to be solved, and Mathematical Reasoning will not let it become tedious to your child.
Beginning Thinking Skills
You and your child are sure to enjoy Building Thinking Skills Beginning. The colorful pages and (often) lap-friendly activities provide a perfect way to build his emerging thinking skills. Includes fun riddles, multiple component descriptions (e.g., point to the one that is blue and has a corner), finish-the-picture activities, opportunities for him to tell the story behind the pictures, and much more.
Day and Night
Logic for toddlers? I love this Smart Game! Renowned for their single-player games for the older child, Smart Games now has games for the littlest thinker. Day and Night Logic Game is a charming game of logic using colors, shapes, and silhouettes. Each challenge is incrementally more difficult than the last and is geared for your child's growing and developing thinking and motor skills.
Wedgits Starter Tote
There is an amazing amount of spatial and geometric learning to be discovered with the use of Wedgits. The Wedgits 20-Piece Tote, with slightly larger pieces for little hands, is designed especially for two- and three-year-olds. Also includes a Wedgits Building Board and forty-eight design cards, all bundled in a handy carry tote. From simple recognition of the pieces to complex designs, the design cards are grouped into four graduated building levels, growing in complexity to provide a continual challenge for your child's reasoning and manipulative skills. This set will challenge your child's dexterity as well as her creative thinking skills.
Draw and Learn Faces
Draw & Learn Faces is an adorable pre-drawing book to help children of all artistic abilities make essential precursory steps to reading and writing. Colorful pages include space for toddlers to add features, from bulbous noses, spiky eyelashes, and crooked teeth, to wavy hair and fuzzy whiskers. Plus there are pages needing a simple splash of color to complete them, perfect for young children just learning to grasp a crayon.
Jumbo Pencils
A standard-sized pencil is often difficult for sweet, chubby fingers to grasp. These Jumbo Pencils make gripping easier with their large surface area, triangular shape, and appealing grippy nubs.
Grip Trio Pencil Sharpener
True to its name, the GRIP Trio Sharpener has three sharpening stations: one for standard-size pencils, one for jumbo-size pencils, and one designed to prolong the life of colored pencils. Most pencil shapes will fit in the GRIP Trio Sharpener, including round, triangular, and octagonal pencils. And perhaps best of all, the small shavings storage compartments mean you won’t have to sweep pencil debris from your table or stand by the garbage can to sharpen a pencil! Comes in assorted colors.

My Very First Castles Book
My Very First Castles Book combines history and language study into one colorful, oversized board book. Each 2-page spread covers a different aspect of castle life.
G is for Goat
We suggest reading a new alphabet book every week with your preschooler to help him become familiar with the letters and their sounds. (Your local library will save you a fortune this year!) To get you started though, we've included our very favorite alphabet book, G is for Goat. With the super-sweet illustrations and engrossing look at the life of goats from the perspective of a very young farmer, this book has a ton of appeal to parents and kids alike! Reading should be pleasurable, and at this age that is easy to attain.
Farmland Math
What do you get when you mix a bold, bright, farm-themed play mat with 30 vibrant jumbo farm animals? A crazy-smart curriculum to introduce toddlers to the wonders of math and thinking skills! Farmland Math is 36 weeks of straightforward skill-building math. Gradually spiralling concepts include grouping, counting, patterns, plus rudimentary addition and subtraction skills. Includes a table-size, durable, wipe-clean mat, plus Timberdoodle's exclusive Farmland Math manual to guide you along the way.
Bunny Peek-A-Boo
What a delightful brain game for your two- and three-year-olds! As they arrange the large, sturdy wooden blocks and lovable bunny to match the cards, they will learn prepositions such as on, behind, and under, as well as develop the critically necessary skill of 3-D spatial perception, important for reading and mathematical reasoning. Bunny Peek-A-Boo includes sixty challenges printed on individual cards; a red, yellow, and blue block; and, of course, the sweet bunny.
Twisty Dropper+ H20 LaLa!
These cheery eyedroppers add a playful dimension to building fine-motor skills and teaching cause and effect. The perfect size for preschoolers, Twisty Droppers are a grand supplement for early science exploration, and to build little hand muscles, too. Each Twisty Droppers is six inches long. Colors will vary.

Many science experiments are enhanced by the use of colored water. H2O la la's tablets are completely safe, non-staining, and are the easiest way to add striking color to water. American-made for children and with no added oils, fragrances, or soap, H2O la la's tablets will delight your child with fizzy action and a dazzling burst of color. Includes 300 tablets, assorted in both size and color: red, yellow, and blue!

Primary Science Kit
We were smitten the first time we saw Learning Resources Primary Science Kit, and apparently we weren't the only ones. Winner of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio 2010 Gold Seal Award, Primary Science Kit is a collection of ten durable, plastic, easy-to-grip replicas of real-life science lab tools. Simple science instruments sized just right for smaller, clumsier hands, these tools are not just for play. Each chunky tool actually works. Tiny bugs are magnified, measurement markers are accurate, and the sturdy tweezers add a dimension that less extensive sets leave out. The ten colorful, double-sided activity cards encourage scientific inquiry and curiosity. Your children will have a blast pouring, mixing, combining, and measuring their concoctions.
My First Scissors + Let's Cut Books
The Creativity for Kids My First Scissors are really cool, chunky fish scissors that make cutting paper easier for little hands. The ergonomically designed, bright orange and yellow scissors operate with a spring mechanism, are for both right-handed and left-handed use, and feature blades with rounded points for safety. Officially for ages 4+, we've included them in preschool simply because we haven't been able to find safer or better beginning scissors.

Learning to safely use a pair of scissors seems to bring extraordinary joy to young children. In Kumon's Let's Cut Paper series, your child will learn how to hold and control scissors, proceeding from the simple one-stroke cuts of a dog's whiskers to the more complicated zig-zag lines of a king's crown. Pages are sturdy enough to manage, but not so thick as to be difficult to cut.

Bubber
Imported from Sweden, Bubber is an excellent source of tactile stimulation, improving gross- and fine-motor skills in a satisfyingly gentle way. Startlingly light, it leaves clean, sharp edges when cut and precise impressions when imprinted. Children enjoy working with Bubber because it is not sticky or gritty; it actually feels warm in their hands. And because it is so very soft, even the tiniest or weakest hands can shape this compound. Bubber is messy, so indulge when housework can take a backseat to creativity. But it never leaves a residue, never dries out, and cleans up quickly and easily--you can even use your vacuum!

Koh-I-Noor Magic FX Pencils
Now for the little, or maybe not so little ones, comes a collection of pencils that are sure to add pizzazz to any school assignment. Each of the chunky Koh-I-Noor Magic FX pencils contains lead that is multi-colored, so as you draw, the strokes seamlessly change colors. These oversized hexagonal pencils are comfortable to use and the 5.6mm leads are soft and mega-bright. We use ours in our Sunday School class to motivate the kids to write answers – the colorful, randomly changing and unpredictable artwork and words is a big incentive. Koh-I-Noor Magic FX pencils can also make excellent doodling accessories. Every Koh-I-Noor Magic FX pack contains one each Magic Original, Magic America, Magic Neon, Magic Fire, and Magic Tropical. Each pencil measures 7 in. long by 5/16 in. diameter.
Draw and Learn Animals
Draw & Learn Animals is another adorable pre-drawing book to help children of all artistic abilities make essential precursory steps to reading and writing. Colorful pages include space for toddlers to add details to a variety of animals. Plus there are pages needing a simple splash of color to complete them, perfect for young children just learning to grasp a crayon.
Dot to Dot For Tiny Tots
The ideal first activity book for toddlers, Dot to Dot for Tiny Tots is full of simple tracing (from one dot to another) exercises which help young children develop their fine-motor and problem-solving skills.
Complete Book of Songs...
As massive as its name implies, The Complete Book and CD Set of Rhymes, Songs, Poems, Fingerplays and Chants incorporates over 700 activities to invite young children into music, language, and imaginary play. This book makes it easy to plan a fresh and enjoyable activity based on whatever theme you want to highlight. Rhymes are an enjoyable way to give our children a rich and robust vocabulary, and help our brains recall words and facts, a perfect workout for developing brains. And because actions, movement, and dances are associated with children's rhymes and songs, your child's gross-motor skills will flourish!
Smart Snacks Trail Mix & Match
Trail Mix & Match initially can be used as a free-play threading activity, especially if this is a new skill for your tot. But once it is easy, dial up the challenge using the suggestions included in Timberdoodle’s Preschool Handbook where he will learn sorting, color, size and shape identification, how to sequence the mix, and even how to use the numbered candy pieces in a correct manner. Each set includes four pretzels, four raisins, four peanuts, four crackers, four chocolate chips, and five numbered candies, plus a durable nylon bag and two 16” nylon laces.
Haba Town Maze Magnetic Game
New for 2015 with adorable, vibrant graphics is Haba’s Magnetic Town Maze. Made of plywood, Magnetic Town Maze promotes color identification, matching, language, and listening skills and offers your child a fine-motor activity that promotes concentration, balance, and matching. Also durable, Magnetic Town Maze is perfect for travel or quiet play at home.
Jumbo Bananagrams
Bananagrams for toddlers? Yes! The oversized Jumbo Bananagrams tile is an indestructible, substantial three-inch square, so it is safe even for your little guys. Your child can match tiles, locate a particular letter, or, to really challenge his auditory memory, find a short series of letters. Turn the tiles over and play a memory game, put the tiles in alphabetical order, or spell simple words. Once you get started, you will be astonished at all that you can do with Jumbo Bananagrams! Includes a Timberdoodle Exclusive Parent Quick-Start Ebook guide with play variations and tips.
Big Oball
Bigger circles, bigger holes, bigger ball, bigger action. Everything about the Big Oball is bigger. Yet it is just as smooth and shiny, and just as indestructible, as the Oball Rattle. Kick it, stomp it, crush it, and the Big Oball bounces right back to a perfectly formed sphere. Made of silicone, the Oball is lightweight and durable; just pop it in your dishwasher when the need arises. Multi-colored.
