Timberdoodle's review

Many years ago, when our children were beginning readers, we used the Pathway Readers to successfully monitor and encourage an ongoing reading program.

Designed to be used in Amish classrooms, these basal readers are solidly wholesome, with none of the fantasy that is commonplace in both Christian and secular readers. If you are weary of the brashness that is evident in readers with contemporary story lines, you'll find these a refreshing alternative.

Here the children are expected to obey their parents, respect their teachers, ask forgiveness when they do wrong, and humbly submit to the discipline of those in authority! Yet they still enjoy life!!

Because the Amish don't use electricity, you won't find stories dealing with the latest in films, computers, or TVs. Instead, the stories are centered around farm life, with horse auctions, harvests, and LARGE families. We have compared these books to several home school basal readers and have found that they are more challenging in the lower grades and infinitely more interesting. With simple typesetting and a few black-and-white sketches, these hardback books are not splashy, but are lovely in their simplicity.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2016 Seventh-Grade Curriculum Kit!

Incredibly Inspiring Reader! September 20, 2011
Reviewer: Celena J. from US
I'm saving this book for my children who are only in 2nd grade. I picked it up earlier this week and have been hooked ever since!  The historical fiction, memoirs, and literature selections are captivating and inspiring, whether you're in 7th grade or 32!  The book includes selections from Leo Tolstoy, stories about Johannes Gutenberg & the printing press, stories from "The Martyr's Mirror," and historical fiction style bible stories.  It's got interesting and exciting writings that will inspire and teach your children.  My children are only in 2nd grade but I can't wait to use this with them someday!

I just love our pathway reading books. November 5, 2008
Reviewer: Lori P. from Sunrise Beach, MO
I just love our pathway reading books.  What I like most is that they teach good morals and are a progressive reading alternative. You can also shop around and find work books that go along with this reader.  Now we have our required reading, phonics and language art's all in one.  Even if you are just looking for something age appropriate to read to your children at night time this would be a good start. It can open up some good conversations. If you are worried about what your child is reading this is great way to put some good wholesome reading back into their lives.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

By far my favorite way to teach reading skills!! November 4, 2008
Reviewer: Genalee B. from Micanopy, FL
Pathway Readers are by far my favorite way to teach reading skills while at the same time discussing all the true-to-life character dilemmas faced by all children growing up in close-knit families today.  The children portrayed in the readers are real kids, not perfect by any means, but they demonstrate a teachable spirit when corrected, and a thoughtfulness of others' feelings.  The parents in the stories are wise and kind and worthy of the children's respect.  Some of my most cherished memories with my kids growing up are our reading times around the Pathway Readers.  The reason I would not buy them again is because they are tough hardback books, and aside from a few crayon marks, are still good as new after all my kids read from them, and can be passed on to my grown children to use with my grandkids (the first one will be old enough in about 2 years!) On second thought, I may be buying them again after all, if my kids don't live close enough to pass them around, or if they have kids the same age (don't want to start any bickering between siblings after all these years of character training!) :-)

...soon were beloved by my own children! October 24, 2008
Reviewer: Cindy B. from Moscow, ID
I first used the Pathway readers with my oldest child 15 years ago.  We are now in our 16th year of homeschooling, and I think this is the ONLY product I have used with each and every child!  We love the stories, especially in the lower grade readers.  In fact, some of these stories are MY favorites that I actually look forward to reading again with my youngest.  Each and every story is well written and well developed, often with several shorter stories combining to form a longer narrative, which allows for true character development and interest for the reader.  These stories are moral without being preachy, and interesting without resorting to more modern themes.  The main characters, Peter and Rachel, seem like very real children, and were soon beloved by my own children.  We love Pathway readers!
