Most parents know that a child who only memorizes math facts without really understanding math will find progressively complex concepts more and more difficult to understand. But what they erroneously think is that such problems arise about the time a child is memorizing the multiplication table. Not so. Unlike reading, an integral skill that is tightly woven throughout our entire day, math tends to be a more sporadic subject, essential when you need it and then easily set aside. That is why it is imperative that a child is able to reason his way through any mathematical problem. Mathematical Reasoning is a great place to start. With 240 pages of quick, straightforward problems to build mathematical reasoning skills in preschoolers, these highly motivational activities will take your child beyond mere drill work by using step-by-step, discussion based problem solving. Concepts spiral gradually so that children do not forget as they go and are written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Non-reproducible.

Topics/activities include counting, identifying, matching, ordering, position, comparing and estimating, addition, subtraction, locating, writing, grouping, patterns, geometric shapes, measurement, data/probability, and fractions.
Answer guide included in the back of the book.

Great product August 8, 2012

We really enjoyed this book. I love how the book is separated into different color coded catagories but also how review is woven throughout and learning truly builds. Also, I appreciate how thoroughly it teaches my daughter to think things through and reason out a problem. We will be using these books to support our math curriculum for years to come.

Fun for preschool April 20, 2012

Although we are not into workbooks in general, this was one of the items we got for our 4-year-old as an informal preschool resource. This is the activity she picks to do most often! The book is colorful and inviting, and packed with a variety of activities ranging from simple counting to dot-to-dots to basic logic. Rather than working through it sequentially, we let her pick which pages she wants to do (reminding her that they are usually trickier toward the end). It has been really neat to see her understanding of the concepts (e.g. patterns) develop over the past year. One thing that could improve this book, however, would be a bit more information about some of the concepts when they are introduced--although most parents will have no trouble filling in the gaps.

Beginning Mathematical Reasoning Review January 9, 2012

I chose this book for our PreK learner, Evan. He will be moving up to Kindergarten in the fall, and I want to include him more in workbooks.

Evan is really enjoying this workbook! We have tried a few others, and he didn’t really take to them. Mathematical Reasoning however, is a hit!

This is not your thin, use-in-a-week kind of workbook, there are a beefy 235  pages!

Beginning Mathematical Reasoning has everything Evan will need to be ready for Kindergarten.

Review by Capitally Frugal January 3, 2012

We received Math Reasoning Beginning PreK a few weeks ago; and aside from some skipped days over the holidays, we’ve been diligently plodding through it.  A loves it – she always reminds me that it’s time to “study” (although I think part of that might be due to receiving a roasted chestnut as a reward for finishing her allotted pages!).

Math Reasoning helped solidify her ability to count to ten, learn her colors, and color within the lines.  Obviously, there are still days when she loses interest and wants to play with her toy kitchen instead.  But, for the most part, she loves counting and coloring the neat pictures, especially the airplanes. As I’m sure most of you moms know, toddlers don’t have the best attention span.  But, the varied lessons and different pictures, help to spark A’s interest and keep her from becoming bored.  Daily reviewing what she’s learned and letting her work at her own pace has really helped A master her numbers (we’re still a little shaky on the colors).

I was extremely impressed with how well laid-out Math Reasoning Beginning Pre-K is.  It starts out so simply that it encourages A (a two year old!) that she can master simple counting and colors.  And, once the foundation of math was laid, it’s been neat to watch her learning more, without it turning into a drudgery.

Review by As For My House January 3, 2012

We are not a fan of “busywork”, so we don’t have a lot of workbooks in the house. I like these because they are geared towards thinking skills, not rote memorization of facts or lists.

R.T. is right on age for this… because they are fun and visually appealing activities – and probably because he isn’t doing any other workbook type work – he is having a great time.

So far we haven’t hit anything that he doesn’t know, but there’s nothing wrong with reinforcing some of these types of basic concepts (as long as everyone’s having fun). This book used the first few lessons to cover counting, colors, and shapes.

I’m not sure if you would use this as part of your primary curriculum, either, but it is certainly a nice “fun” way to get some learning done in spite of Spring Fever.
