For the student who has pretty much mastered English grammar lessons, this volume in our "Language Lessons" series takes a different turn. Still containing full-color picture studies, along with lessons in dictation, editing, and narration, this is also a one-year creative writing program, concentrating on story-writing. As usual, new concepts are introduced in bite-sized, incremental fashion, and are written directly to the student in an easy-to-follow, conversational format.

Charlotte Mason: Learning in Context
As soon as the review copies of these books arrived, I was smitten. This is the finest implementation of the Charlotte Mason method of instruction I have ever seen. If you are new to home education, the Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) name may not be familiar to you. A British educator who devoted her life to improving the quality of children's education, to Charlotte Mason, language arts skills consisted of narration, the child telling back a story; copywork, the transcribing of a well-written piece of literature as handwriting practice; and dictation, which is spelling and grammar taught within the context of rich language instead of static lists.

From Theory to Ready-to-Use
Sandi Queen has done an excellent job of combining those lesson essentials, and even if she had stopped there it would have been a fine program. But instead, she takes the series from satisfactory to exceptional by adding delightful flourishes that include picture studies with full-color paintings, basic phonics instruction, poetry appreciation and writing, creative writing, and much more.

Full-Color Paintings Make These Books Sparkle

It is the gorgeous reproduction of notable paintings that will first catch your eye. True to the Charlotte Mason philosophy, the picture studies are based on classic works of art, introducing the child to the paintings of great artists, encouraging him to study them by asking pertinent questions, and then asking for a narration of what he has observed.

Very Short Lessons Cover Lots of Material Easily
Likewise characteristic of the Charlotte Mason approach, each lesson takes a scant five to fifteen minutes a day. This increases a bit with age, but is never as time-consuming as you will find in the more staid programs typical of government schools. And Language Lessons doesn't try to do everything every day, which alleviates the tedium associated with other language arts programs. I know many mothers who struggle under the multiple pressures of parenting and educating, to say nothing of their responsibilities as wives and Christ-followers. But I don't know any mother who is too busy to use this program. Each book is a large, consumable, perfect-bound paperback, containing 180 lessons, and in full color.

Perfect Language Arts curriculum for us. November 10, 2015
Reviewer: Julie M.
I have been homeschooling my children for 26 years, and if I've learned anything in that time it's that each child is different, has different gifts, different talents, different needs. I tried various resources for teaching my youngest, but none of them worked well---they were either too rigid, too boring, too repetitive, or too intense for him. Language Lessons for the High School Student solved those issues. The lessons are short and broken up into manageable portions, are to the point, and varied enough to keep him interested. We are both thoroughly enjoying this curriculum.

Not as good as younger versions October 24, 2011
Reviewer: Virginia Morgan from Greenville, IL United States
Okay, I LOVE Language Lessons. They are easy to use, easy to understand, don't take much time, cover all areas of language arts, expose children to beautiful examples of every kind of literature and art. The workbook format is so handy, both for working in, and for record-keeping. This time around, however, I am not enjoying some of the copywork passages. I am required to dictate, which I do not mind, but the passages are verbose. Writing style has become much less wordy and more concise in the last couple of decades. While I enjoy old-fashioned usage, like a good Austen novel, I also need my high-schooler to learn to write for today. The exceedingly long sentences and bizarre use of hyphens, dashes, and commas wore me out. We are going to add Writer's Inc. to round out this year, and we are not using all the copywork in the book.

Excellent source for writing! October 10, 2011
Reviewer: Amy Senecal from Palmyra, NY United States
My 15yo daughter used this book last year and enjoyed it very much.  She loves to write stories and I feel that this book definitely helped her to improve her quality of writing without overwhelming her.  Sandi Queen did a wonderful job of breaking the entire process into small, approachable and easily understood lessons.  The full-color pictures and quality pages were icing on the cake!

We are using this for my 14-yr old, and she really enjoys it.  The lessons are a perfect length, and varied enough to maintain interest in both student and teacher.  I see improvement in the quality of her writing and appreciate the well-rounded exposure to beautiful language examples.  Both my daughter and I would highly recommend this!

Whole-heartedly endorse these books! October 23, 2008
Reviewer: Karen B. from Cardington, OH
We love the Language Lessons series by Sandi Queen!  She's done a very nice job of picking out interesting quotes, stories, etc. for children to copy.  The pictures are absolutely fantastic!!  We use these for all of our children who are school age and will continue to use them for our younger ones.  I used to have the kids copy different things I picked out, but a I got busier I wanted to find something that would do the same thing I was doing, but I didn't find anything I liked.  I was thrilled to find these and was so happy to see Timberdoodle start to offer these.  I whole-heartedly endorse these books by Sandi Queen,  You won't be disappointed.
