Timberdoodle's review

JUNIOR Botany Notebooking Journal
for Exploring Creation with Botany.

This junior notebooking journal is much like the original Botany Notebooking Journal, but is designed for younger students or those with limited writing skills. All the lines are primary writing lines (a dashed line between two solid lines), and there are far fewer than in the original journal.

This junior journal is perfect for:
  • Younger students that have not yet mastered handwriting
  • Older students that are delayed in handwriting mastery
  • Older students with learning disabilities
  • Students that are new to written narration

    Coloring, Vocabulary, Copywork, and Diagramming
Each lesson in the junior journal begins with two coloring pages for the student to color while he listens to the reading of the text. These pages are followed by a template page designed to encourage creative expression where the student illustrates what he has learned and writes a sentence or two about the topic.

Vocabulary retention activities are next, as well as Scripture copywork (shorter than in the original notebooking journal and with larger font).

    Includes Templates for all Assignments
Templates to complete all the notebooking assignments, the Personal Person Project with transparencies for the animals, project record keeping, Scientific Speculation Sheets and, of course, the same beautiful, full-colored miniature books found in the original notebooking journals are included in the junior journal.

    What's Missing?
There are some higher-level activities missing from the junior journal, but they are replaced with cut-and-paste activities that bring the subject to life. What's missing?
  • The lengthy and technical Vocabulary Crosswords
  • The What Do You Remember? written review questions
  • The Final Review

  • Ideal for Students Uncomfortable with Writing Paragraphs
These junior journals will be perfect for the beginning writer or the child who is not yet writing well. Every child writes at a different age, so age is not the best factor when determining whether to purchase a regular notebooking journal or the junior journal. The best determining factor is whether or not the child feels comfortable writing paragraphs. If not, the junior journal is a great tool to help the child begin incorporating writing into his learning.

    Lovely addition January 17, 2015

Our son really enjoys the activities in this journal. Writing is NOT his favorite thing to do but he never complains with this journal because he really get into the spirit of being a little scientist cataloging his thoughts and discoveries. I love the other activities that break up the space and writing for him as well. We had not started cursive yet but this journal had cursive entries to practice that has him interested in learning...bonus.

Great for beginning writers! May 31, 2014

This is a great tool to reinforce the information being learned in Apologia Exploring Creation with Botany. We got a few friends together this year and did a "class" once a week. Lesson planning was easy, we used the suggested plan in the beginning of this notebooking journal! It has crafts to glue and paste, coloring pages, space to record what you are learning, pictures to label, and tons of extra ideas to help make botany more relevant to your own learner. We used the Junior notebooking journal for fourth grade and down. I even bought one for my (already reading, already writing) preschooler. The writing in the book can be done as copy work, if you want to have them narrate to you and then give them a few sentences to copy into the journaling areas of the book. The writing areas don't leave room for more than 2 or 3 sentences for a student who is still struggling with smaller handwriting. (which I thought was enough, anyway!) I love this product, and we will be moving on to Zoology 1 next year! already bought the junior notebooking journals! :)

A Welcome Product For Younger Students! June 18, 2013
    Reviewer: Kimberlee
I've been waiting for something like this! It's the perfect supplement to the Apologia Textbook for younger students (about 2nd or 3 grade and below). My oldest son used the regular notebook with the Astronomy course when he was 6 years old, and it was good, but I ended up doing a lot of the writing for him (as he dictated his answers to me), simply because it involved so much writing. Also, the lines were a little on the small side for little fingers. This notebook includes much more age-appropriate writing lines (with the dotted lines in the middle), and is less-demanding when it comes to written answers. Yet, it still fosters thoughtful application of the material in the textbook. It is an excellent supplement to the textbook, which encourages notebooking, without requiring the work it takes to assemble a notebook from scratch. The mini-books at the end of the book, alone, are worth the cost of the notebook. It's my boys' favorite part of the notebook. They LOVE those mini-books! I bought one for each of my children, though we work through the textbook together as a family. That way they each get to craft their own written responses. We use the coloring pages as a "waiting for dinner" activity. It's a great distraction for both of them, sitting side-by-side, while I bustle about the kitchen each evening. I'm so glad this junior notebook is available!
