Originally published about 30 years ago, the author of this series of books is recognized for her deep knowledge of the suffering church under communistic rule. The plight of Christians behind what was then called the Iron Curtain was a great concern to Myrna Grant, and she wrote many novels describing the daily lives of these suffering saints. The Ivan series was designed to give children a glimpse of what it meant to be a believer under such terrifying conditions where secrecy, fear of discovery, interrogations, and the injustice of a communist/atheistic society were a part of everyday living.

These six books introduce a different culture and historical period, yet Ivan and his sister Katya face some of the same struggles all children face. Do they want to please God more than man? Do they believe God can keep them safe? Do they believe in His sovereignty? The Gospel is explained in simple language, and scripture is woven throughout the books in a natural, not contrived, manner.

Circumstances in Russia have changed in 30 years, yet communistic oppression, regardless of the country, remains the same. If your children enjoy action-packed historical fiction, and you want them to read books that reinforce your Christian values, you will both be happy with the Ivan series. Highly recommended, these stories about Ivan and his family are ideal for children aged seven to 11 years. Each spine-tingling book does stand alone, but your children will be glad you bought the series. This collection includes all six titles in the Ivan series.

I love reading to my August 11, 2014
Reviewer: John j.
I love reading to my children. This time spent with them is my favorite time of the day. I do not want to waist it on twaddle. These books are going to be family favorites. We have just started the first in the series. Showing children how to share Christ in an everyday conversation is benefital. But showing Christ's love in action is most important because talk is cheep. The one draw back to these books is the quality of the paperback. They are small. Hard to hold. Cheaply made.

Really Good for Your Kids (and Parents!) September 26, 2011
Reviewer: Erica Sargent from Castle Rock, CO United States
We bought these for our 10 year old son, and he not only gobbled them up, but then he passed them on to Mom, and I did the same.  They are thought-provoking, faith building adventures that both genders and many ages would benefit from.

Adventure behind the Iron Curtain October 26, 2010
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from United States
The Ivan series by Myrna Grant really gives the reader a glimpse into the former communist Soviet Union.  We enjoyed reading these adventurous books when we studied the history of Russia.  I like how the books incorporate Russian words, customs, and places into the story.  Ivan and his family are portrayed as genuine Christians with strong faith in God.  Many of the evils and problems of communism are depicted in these books, as well as the trials and persecution many Christians faced.   Each book encourages putting one’s trust in God.  I feel the price for the Ivan books is reasonable.  My only complaint is that the word  “stupid” is used several times and children, rather than families, are the ones off doing dangerous things (albeit for good), often without their parents’ knowledge.  This, however, is not done through lying and the virtue of honesty is upheld through all their adventures.  Overall, I would recommend these books.

These are really great! October 8, 2010
Reviewer: Misty Marr from Buckeye, AZ United States
I first read these books 15 years ago.  These are a really great way to introduce your children to the fact that many people are persecuted for their faith.  It is so easy to take our freedom for granted.  Since the main characters are children, your children will be able to relate to them, and they will be very eye opening.  Since all books have the same children, you will feel like they are your friends and you won't want to wait to see what happens next.  THese are easy reading, yet profound.  THey teach good Biblical principles throughout the book, not with a sermon, but by demonstrating them in the lives of the characters.
