While a visual learner will learn and retain more through the use of pictures, we have found all children are fascinated with frame-by-frame illustrations of any detailed topic, especially involving books pertaining to history or an unfamiliar culture. That is why this Christmas season an early gift of the illustrated Gospel of Luke is so appropriate.
This innovative approach uses Bible text complete with dialogue boxes to show who is speaking so children can follow the story and action. This helps children understand what is going on, and remember it better. These realistic illustrations will make the Word of God easier to understand than ever before. The realistic style used also leaves an unconscious impression that these were real people doing real things.
Using the ICB version means that only a third-grade reading level is required for this thought-for-thought "translation". Even so, the best available Greek and Hebrew texts were used to assure a faithful translation of the original languages. The first version of the Bible translated specifically for children was not intended for use as a study Bible, and the text reveals that - yet we think that it is an outstanding way to engage children as they begin to read the Bible for themselves.
Little extras include placing Old Testament quotations in a parchment-like background to represent that they are older words. Most will also have the book, chapter and verse with them so you can know where they came from in the Old Testament.
And when your child finds a small "n" this will let him know there is a note at the base of the page. Often it will give your child a bit more information about the particular word or phrase that is helpful to know. Only in one instance, did we notice that they miss the mark when, on page 15, in reference to Luke 3:17 it says, "This means that Jesus will come to separate the good people from the bad people, saving the good and punishing the bad." Aren't you thankful that admission to heaven is not on the basis of our goodness, but rather on His righteousness? Please be sure your child also knows this!
We have been using this series of books in our children's program at church for many months and it is my favorite method for teaching young children the gospel. However, I am told it has also been successfully used in prison ministry and with families from other cultures.
