Horizons Phonics and Reading Kindergarten
Sample Pages
While the kindergarten series starts off a bit simplistic with the basics of writing the letters of the alphabet, before the first book is completed he'll be reading words that contain consonant and short vowel sounds. By Book 4 of the kindergarten series he will understand concepts such as digraphs, silent letters, compound words, and more!

Optional Extras
The Student Readers and Teacher Guides included in the Complete Sets are optional, but if you are a first-time teacher you may appreciate the additional handholding.

About Horizons Phonics & Reading Series:

Help For Struggling Readers (Especially 7-10 Year Old Boys!)
If you have homeschooled for any length of time, belonged to a homeschool support group, or just been blessed with a quiver full of children, then you know how vastly different each child can be and how what works for one child just might not click with another. Never is this more apparent or more stressful than in the realm of reading. Having effortlessly taught not only our five typical children but also a handful of special needs children to read using the phonics programs in our catalog, we are wholly sold on their scope and ease. But there will always remain a group of children who are so dynamically caught up in life that reading competency continues to elude them. Characteristically these are seven- to ten-year-old boys, whose brains are racing in high gear; boys who are extremely adept with their hands but continue to struggle to read. We offer these sets of phonics workbooks for such children.

Beyond Excellent, But Not For Kindergarteners
Thorough and colorful, the Horizons Phonics & Reading Student Books are marketed for kindergarten - 2nd grade, but unless you have a five- or six-year-old that would rather do workbooks than eat, I urge you to not use these workbooks until your child is a bit older. However, for the child that has been exposed to phonics, is mature enough to assume some of the responsibility for his education, and now needs the discipline of daily hands-on practice, these are beyond excellent.

Don't judge a book by its cover January 15, 2013

This product is grate! My daughter learned to read very quickly with this product. The program is very advanced and some of the pages can be over welming I recomend going at your childs pace and not the books recomended pace. There is alot of seat work to be done so this might not be a good fit for an active child.

a bright, colorful phonics curriculum. August 22, 2011
Reviewer: Rebecca Kvenvolden from Federal Way, WA United States
If you like the bright, beautiful colors in Horizon's math curriculum, you will likely enjoy the phonics as well.  This curriculum is concise, direct, easy to implement, and PACKED, the box loaded, with workbooks, teacher's guide, puzzles, white board, readers.  It makes the organized person in me HAPPY.  One caveat is that I used this with my 1st grader, and there's NO WAY any of my children would have been able to use Horizons phonics and reading Kindergarten in kindergarten, way too advanced.  Nonetheless, i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for 1st graders.
