Helirang: Soft Outdoor Boomerang Helicopter!
This was one of the more impressive toys we saw demoed at Toy Expo. We found ourselves drifting repeatedly to their booth to watch them throw the remarkable boomerang helicopter, the Helirang. So we ordered a case and spent the better part of an afternoon trying to recreate their lovely forty-foot swooping arcs and return flight paths, with rotors spinning that should have brought the Helirang right back to us. Well, I had absolutely no success, but a couple of visiting eight-year-olds had a blast and actually came quite a bit closer to what we saw demoed.

Amazingly Durable
The soft foam construction is amazingly durable, even when used on the Timberdoodle crushed rock driveway. But be aware that the out-and-back trajectory requires an area roughly the size of a basketball court -- and more is better. And while there is a note on the packaging that there are instructions and tips included on how to fly it, the manufacturer states that this is a typo, and there are no instructions or tips included. Basically, to throw a Helirang, you grab the rotor with the curved edge facing left at ninety degrees to the ground, toss it forward with a smooth strong motion, and release with a snap of the wrist. If you can get a Helirang to work right, it is very cool. But because we could not consistently do so, we are closing Helirangs out at this fantastic price.
