Timberdoodle's review Learn more
We love the logic behind Sequential Spelling and the gains we have made using it. But the one thing we noticed it lacked was the reason for the spelling. Recognizing patterns is absolutely the most sensible way to learn; knowing the why behind the patterns will help cement that model to memory.
Handy English Encoder Decoder has more than sixty categorized spelling rules concisely packaged into a slim little volume. Plus, it includes over 200 phonics rules, rules for dividing words into syllables, commonly confused spellings and word pairs, spelling and phonics games, and more. Written by homeschoolers for homeschoolers, this is a great resource for every teaching parent.
  • More than 60 categorized spelling rules
  • Over 200 phonics rules
  • Rules for dividing words into syllables
  • Commonly confused spellings and word pairs
  • Spelling and phonics games; and much more

Perfect for students of all ages! June 2, 2012
    Reviewer: Rhonda
I've used this with my students at home and also with ESL students in from fourth grade up through grad school. They all benefitted from it and were fascinated to know the rules behind the weird spellings of so many words. It's wonderful to be able to give them a reason beyond "just because." It's clearly written and engaging, not dry like many reference manuals. I'd strongly recommend using this with advanced children in grades 1-3 and any child in grades four and up.

Great Common Rules Section; Hard Reference February 15, 2011
Reviewer: Jennifer Koehler from Peoria, AZ United States
This has lots of great information to browse to better understand general spelling rules, particularly at the beginning (p. 10-29), which details general rules for syllables, vowels, consonants, prefixes, suffixes, and hyphens, etc. However, I found that if I was needing guidance on a certain rule (ie vs. ei), it was harder to find among the alphabetic phonics rules. I also found their coding system a bit difficult. Still, a worthwhile reference to have around.
