We have so appreciated Starr's book Training Hearts, Teaching Minds, which was part of our family's morning devotions for four years. So we were delighted when the publisher sent us her latest manuscript to preview. It's a keeper.

While still devotional in purpose, Grandpa's Box is written in a completely different format than Training Hearts, Teaching Minds. Grandpa spends his retirement reclaiming treasures from people's trash. His two grandchildren, Marc and Amy, are his constant after-school companions. Marc, a military buff, is fascinated with war stories and the men who play a part in them. Grandpa capitalizes on that passion and introduces the children to the concept of spiritual warfare as it is played out in  Scripture. Initially, Marc and Amy are unenthusiastic about hearing again the same Bible stories that they grew up with. But as Grandpa skillfully weaves military terminology with solid theology, the stories take on fresh meanings and insights.

From Genesis to Revelation, Grandpa carefully shows how each story fits as an episode in the greater story of God's redemption of His people. This is a marvelous read-aloud book, sure to impact your family and generate lots of discussion. For ages nine to 12.

Ancient history brought to life June 14, 2012
Reviewer: Threeboysmama
We used this book in our study of ancient history. It does an excellent job of connecting history, people we're familiar with from the Bible, and God's plan for humanity. Really a great book for bringing history to life!

Absolutely wonderful! April 20, 2012

This is an amazing, powerful tool for teaching God's plan for redemption. I highly recommend it. Would love to see the figurines that the grandfather in the story uses packaged and sold.

Excellent Family Devotion time book. October 25, 2011
Reviewer: Regina from WV United States
We read this book each night at the end of our family worship time. The kids didn't want to miss a night! The book reaffirmed what we were studying in a nice "bedtime" book way. THANKS for finding this book!

Great attention keeper October 3, 2011
Reviewer: Laureen Eichelberger from N. Huntingdon, PA United States
This book is well written and will keep children's attention.  We used it starting in December for part of our Advent devotions, but should have started earlier as we did not get all the way through the book by Christmas with our regular schoolwork.  Would make a great book to read instead of your regular schoolwork for a week or 2 leading up to the holidays.

Excellant way to teach your Children! November 17, 2010
Reviewer: Misty Marr from Buckeye, AZ United States
I am really enjoying Grandpa's Box!  It is fun and enjoyable reading, yet so full of good truths.  It is written in a way that particularly appeals to boys, as it includes a war aspect, yet it is just as good for girls.  It uses daily interaction of two siblings and their grandfather as the teaching, so it doesn't feel like a sermon or lecture.  This make a great school "break" and will give the opportunity to discuss God's truths with your children.  I think that it is good for parents to have their bookshelves full of books like these.  You will probably find your children reaching for this one again and again!
