A Quick Parenting Quiz...
True or False: If my children perform poorly in public, I feel crushed or angry.

True or False: A "good" child, one who outwardly keeps the rules, is good enough for me.

How are your children raised?
A) In the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
B) In the discipline and instruction of the law.

What Is Our Acceptance by God Based On?
When our children were young we thought that the key to raising good children was to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the law. To that end we talked about the law, laid down the law, and concocted additional laws to solve sin problems. But there is a huge difference between loving the law and loving the Lord. When we fail to discern it we run the risk of raising trophy children trained to believe that their acceptance by God is based more on what they do for Him than what Jesus has done for them.

Unable to Save, Powerless to Change
Every time we discipline our children without the gospel we resort to the despair-breeding, Pharisee-producing law that is not only unable to save our children, but also powerless to change them. Give them Grace authors Elyse Fitzpatrick and her daughter Jessica Thompson will help you to discern the difference between gospel discipline and moralistic parenting.

What is Gospel Discipline?
The unspoken goal of most popular child discipline books is that what God wants from our children is morality. Unregenerate children are told that they are pleasing to God when they have achieved a moral victory. But if that were true, then why did Jesus have to die? If we believe that salvation comes only though the Savior, why do we subject our less-than-perfect children to more and more laws? What exactly is gospel discipline and how does it differ from social, civic, and even religious obedience? And if outward conformity to religious obedience is not proof of regeneration, what is?

Dazzle Your Kids with the Gospel of Jesus
Subtitled Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus, Give them Grace could have just as accurately been subtitled Dazzling Your Kids with the Gospel of Jesus. This revolutionary perspective so clearly shows parents the importance of transmitting the life changing truths of the gospel to even the youngest of children. Give Them Grace will show you how to model your parenting after the heavenly Father, who changed His children not by wrath and the law but by grace.

"So many Christian parents fall into the trap of asking the law to do in the hearts of their children what only grace can accomplish. Armed with threats, manipulation, and guilt, they attempt to create change that only the cross of Jesus Christ makes possible. It is so encouraging to read a parenting book that points parents to the grace of the cross and shows them how to be instruments of that grace in the lives of their children."
-Paul Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, What Did You Expect?: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage

"In our human attempts to raise good and godly kids, we often forget that God extended his best grace to us. We are not full of grace on our own; we desperately need his grace. Elyse Fitzpatrick and her daughter, Jessica, provide a great tool to guide parents down the road of gracious parenting. I commend it to you."
-James MacDonald, Senior Pastor, Harvest Bible Chapel, Chicagoland Area; radio teacher, Walk in the Word

"Elyse Fitzpatrick continues her never-ending quest to churn out grace-filled, Christ-centered, gospel-saturated books. And now she's done it again with her daughter, Jessica, coauthoring this excellent parenting book! If you are a parent, get online and order your copy of Give Them Grace today!"
-Deepak Reju, Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Families, Capitol Hill Baptist Church

"The authors-mother and daughter-remind us that parenting is not only hard but also impossible. Yes, we need to nurture, teach, discipline, train, pray, and model, but we must not depend on our parenting skills to change the hearts of our children. Instead, they counsel parents to 'rely on the faithfulness of Jesus, our great high priest, to change their hearts.' Grace for both parents and children flows through the pages of this book; I only wish I had read it at the beginning of my parenting instead of the end."
-Rose Marie Miller, missionary; author, From Fear to Freedom

"This is not just a book on parenting; this is deep training in the gospel. Elyse Fitzpatrick shows parents how to model themselves after the heavenly Father, who changed his children not by wrath and the law but by grace. A lot of books talk about gospel-centeredness in theory; this book shows you how to apply it to one of life's most important relationships."
-J. D. Greear, Senior Pastor, The Summit Church, Durham, North Carolina

Conviction and enouragement! May 31, 2012
    Reviewer: The House Sparrow
I have looked and looked at this book online. I have put it in and taken it out of my cart several times. Why do I NEED another book that will encourage me at first and then leave me alone to wallow in guilt when I fail? Why do I need another book to tell me Aߠ= prefect kids, it won't and I'll be disappointed. Then...I bought it. From the very beginning, the forward written by Tullian Tchividjian, this book is packed full of real encouragement seasoned delicately with conviction. This NOT another how-to book for you to love for a season and then be disenchanted with. This book is a timeless classic. This book is the Gospel!! Grace, grace, and more grace are what you will find. Grace for your children, grace for you. This book is beautiful. It WILL change the way you parent.

We ought to love our children as God loves us February 10, 2012
Reviewer: mother of nine from KY United States
For months I have been contemplating how God deals with me and how I ought to apply that to my children.  Psalm 145:8 says, "The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy."  I too should be those things to my children.  A child in a a puddle of tears or in the gloom of disappointment is not going to respond to a lecture on gratitude or contentment.  A hug and words of compassion work wonders.  The discussion on gratitude and contentment can come at another time.  This book was an encouragement to me to be compassionate to my children.  The author makes many profound statements and has lots of examples.  I did not agree with her teaching on how to deal with Christian children versus dealing with non Christian children as I believe I ought to treat all my children as covenant children.  However, I do not want to throw out the baby with the bathwater and still gave this book as a gift to a good friend.
