The Early Frontier Adventures of George Washington

This book shows how the "Father of Our Country" developed as a great leader and became one of America's first true frontiersmen.

See America's first president as you never have in this surprising and inspiring portrait from Newbery Honor Medalist Sterling North. Meet Washington the frontiersman--a young man who never liked school but who felt at home exploring the far boundaries of colonial America.

Follow Washington on his first surveying trip into the wilds of Virginia at age sixteen; on a sailing voyage to Barbados; and on a mission with the British redcoats into western Pennsylvania, where he narrowly escaped a bloody massacre.

North takes us back to a turbulent, violent, and thrilling era in American history, when both a country and the man who led it struggled to define themselves.

George Washington November 8, 2010
Reviewer: Misty Marr from Buckeye, AZ United States
George Washington - Frontier Colonel is an interesting book about the life of George Washington.  This book mostly focuses on the earlier years.  It puts the historical facts into a format that your children will enjoy.  While, as a whole, I really like the Landmark Series, this one was not my favorite.  I have read much about George Washington's relationship with the Lord and his prayer life.  Not only are those not mentioned in this book, they seem to point out his character flaws, referring to his pride and bad judgement as a result.  I am not sure where truth is about these issues, but I wanted to point it out.  There is also a good bit about romantic relationships that didn't work out.  There is nothing specifically inappropriate, but he is portrayed as really wanting to have a girl and falling in love with one after another.  There are subtle comments about his liking pretty girls. Still those flaws make up a minor part of the book and could easily be discussed or removed.
