A fuel cell is an environmentally friendly energy production device that holds great promise for the future. With this science kit, you can build a model car that runs on water and sunlight using a hydrogen fuel cell. See for yourself how the car of the future can drive without using fossil fuels.
This car uses a unique reversible fuel cell, which can split water in a process called electrolysis and also generate electrical energy. First, energy from sunlight is converted into electricity with the solar panel. The electricity separates water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. These gases are stored in separate tanks at the back of the car. Then, with the electric motor connected, the fuel cell combines the two gases to produce electricity that powers the motor, turning its wheels and driving it across the floor or table. The only by-product is clean water.
Set the car on the rolling display stand to keep it in place for demonstrations and experiments. A battery pack is also included to provide an alternate source of electricity.
Learn about fuel cells and solar cells through experiments you can do on your own, in a classroom, for a science fair project, or with friends. Using the included digital multimeter, you can measure electric currents and voltages to further explore the operations and efficiency of the fuel cell.
