Why read our children gory tales of men and women who voluntarily suffered death for refusing to renounce Christ? Because we want our children to really know that God has been and will always be sufficient, regardless of how horrific the circumstances, and to grasp, as these martyrs did, that death was never a penalty but the reward of serving a gracious God.

In 1563, John Foxe began to record stories of those who died for Jesus. The result was Foxe's Book of Martyrs. Written in the common language of the people, it was also illustrated so that even those who could not read could still have access to these accounts of God working throughout all of history to build His church.

This book became a Christian classic and is still required reading in many Christian homes today. But reports of martyrs did not end in the 1500s, for every century has its examples of gutsy Christians who did not fear those who could kill the body but not kill the soul.

Thankfully, Voice of the Martyrs has recognized this reality and released Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs. This up-to-date and extensively expanded collection of stories of Christian martyrs is an ideal follow-up to Extreme Devotion. Stories of persecution from 33 AD to the present highlight the amazing grace of God that enabled men, women, and children to endure appalling persecution with quiet courage and faith.

Occasional illustrations make it clear that these were not minor inconveniences, but sickening acts of brutality, and so may not be suitable for little eyes. Endorsed by such notables as Ravi Zacharias, John MacArthur, Ray Comfort and Randy Alcorn, Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs is an elegant hardcover, leather-bound book and would make a great gift for any family seeking to live a life of valor.

Christian martyrs study October 25, 2011
Reviewer: Lisa Bittle from Grand Junction, CO United States
Purchased this book to use as a daily bible study for our homeschool students.  As a mother, I have been getting a lot out of the book, but my younger children have found it dry and boring.  I'd recommend this book for older children, perhaps middle to high school students; elementary students seem to get lost in it.  I do like it for scripture memory though.  Also good discusses come out of the stories, even if the children don't understand it all.

A Hard read, but well worth it! October 19, 2010
Reviewer: Misty Marr from Buckeye, AZ United States
This book is hard to read.  It is filled with story after story of men, women and even children who gave their lives for the Lord.  It is convicting to see how faithful they were, even with the threat of death.  I recommend this book for every believer.  This book helped me to realize just how valuable the religious freedom that we have is.  It inspired me to share my faith with others.
