    Review by Amy's Blog January 3, 2012

As I looked through this book and considered which activities I could utilize right now in my home I was struck by the number of activities that we already enjoy or have enjoyed in the past. The authors obviously know babies and toddlers and have done a good job assembling ideas! I think this book will be perfect for the older siblings in our family to find ideas when it is their job to “entertain” the twins. In fact, I kinda wish I had the book in my possession a few weeks ago when I was trying to get some painting done and my tweens needed to keep the boys happy.

Since my twin boys just turned two, I skipped ahead to the section for two year olds and determined right away that they will enjoy the cooking with toddlers section.

Don’t worry, it’s all completely safe and is all about letting your toddlers play with harmless ingredients in a bowl while you cook or use safe utensils in fun ways. My sister has been doing this with her five year old for years and is creating precious memories all week long. I always intend to make this happen but too often get sidetracked by the very real task of feeding my family. It only takes a minute to fill a bowl with cheap dry pasta, hand your child a spoon, and set them to stirring far away from the hot stove. Clearly, they love it too! We have a knife designed for just for little hands (also from Timberdoodle), so I decided to follow the books advice and let my little boys try cutting bananas at breakfast this morning. They had a great time!

Entertaining and Education Babies and Toddlers is organized by age and each of the activities is super easy to implement. Most of the activities can be done with simple items you already own. The illustrations are extremely clear and the book is easy to use.

My Bottom Line: If you have a baby or toddler in your home you will not regret having this book on your shelf. The new mom will get lots of wonderful ideas from birth through age two, the veteran mom will be inspired to spend a bit of focused time on her youngest children, and the babysitting teen or mother’s helper will find a wealth of ways to keep that little one cooing and happily engaged.

Ok, so this book is incredible! Like all Usborne books, its visually pleasing, well constructed and this particular volume has a pleasant pastel color scheme.  The content is really outstanding.  I wish i'd had this from before my oldest was born.  though I will say I wish I had "Entertaining and educating babies and toddlers" when my twins were newborn.  In addition to having good, solid developmental information for each age from newborn-2.5 this book has great ideas for using household items to make toys, and lots of ideas of things to do, food to make, etc just using stuff you have around anyway! Its got a great index filled with concise info- ages and stages stuff, songs and rhymes, simple first aid, some basic special needs issues to look out for.  Its a seriously power-packed 128 page book.  I would consider it a must have for every parent of a baby.
