Timberdoodle's review

Here is the logical advancement from English from the Roots Up Vol 1. With 100 new roots being introduced, this book underscores the enabling value of understanding word origins. Because of its complexity, Vol II is best suited for grades 4 - 12.

About English From The Roots Up:
How did we teach our beginning readers Latin and Greek roots? Well, we knew we didn't want something too dull, too schoolish, too intense, or based too heavily on mythology. With those objectives clarified, it was not difficult to decide that
English from the Roots Up was an ideal program for us.

Designed by elementary school teacher Joegil Lundquist, this program teaches children 100 Greek and Latin words and their derivatives. Each child compiles his own file of 3" X 5" index cards with the root word on the front and the definitions and derivatives on the reverse. The teacher's manual not only includes the root word, derivatives, and sample words, but also lots of great ideas in the teaching notes.

This program could not be easier to implement and is ideal for multilevel teaching. If your children have had no exposure to Latin and Greek root study, you are going to be very impressed with the results. Appropriate for second grade through high-school. Card sets, for the harried mom, are available separately.

We love this method of learning! October 21, 2008
Reviewer: Abbey F. from Cleveland, TN
Both of my children, the 12 year old "wordsmith" and the 9 year old artist, love the game we've made out of "Roots". I give them a Latin or Greek word, then some English words they may know and they try to guess the meaning. They are often able to get close to the meaning of the root word which cements their learning. We follow the directions for making color-coded cards (the artist child loves to decorate her card with pictures of the word meaning as well). It's easy to flip through the book and pick and choose the words you will do - you can pick synonyms, antonyms or words that delight a specific child. We really love this method of learning Latin and Greek roots.

The author clearly loves the history of language October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Laurie W. from Hawthorndene, South Australia
The author's love of the history of language is what grabs me about this program. Unfortunately I have found it tricky to convey the same passion and that has resulted in only a moderate interest from my children. My 8 year old boys are not keen on adding to their handwriting tasks, so we do best with conversations and a picture dictionary.

My girls enjoy using English From the Roots Up October 17, 2008
    Reviewer: Krissy M. from Rocklin,CA
Both of my girls, 6th and 8th grade, enjoy using English From the Roots Up.  We are becoming quite "rooted" in our English language as we sit together and learn.  The amount of derivatives differ appropriately on the back of their flash cards according to each level of ability.  We plan to review these cards each year and build upon them.
