Greek made easy |

My kids and I struggled through a couple of other Greek programs before we found this at Timberdoodle. Elementary Greek is the best!
Greek is now a subject the kids and I enjoy. We have 2 or 3 more chapters left in year one and then will go onto year 2. We actually look forward to Greek each day.
What I like about it is the review in many chapters of things like verb endings, noun endings, and the article "the" that changes in Greek depending on if the noun is masculine, feminine, neuter, singular or plural.
This program rescued us when I thought Greek might be beyond our understanding.

Pros and Cons... |

I was excited to find a Greek program geared towards elementary students. We are now finishing the first book with students ages 5,9,11,16. Pros- This material is more serious than Hey Andrew! It is more accessible for younger students than Bluedorns. It would be easy for my older students to use this material independently. (However, I teach this to all at the same time, as foreign language learning is more enjoyable with a crowd.) It does not require a large daily time investment. It is significantly less expensive than Bluedorns. I have no Greek background and have been able to teach this with minimal frustration. Even my three year old is learning vocabulary. I have used it to teach basic English grammar- two subjects in one! We have enjoyed learning Greek, my children use it as code. Cons- Not enough extra practice material for me to pull from in the teaching book. There were MANY MANY errors, typos, inconsistencies in producing this book. It took several months to receive an errata report from the publisher. I finally reached the author and communicated with her. I would appreciate more explanations as to usage, accents, etc. The author often does not explain things that my children noticed and had questions for. This would not be sufficient for a full high school credit, I will count it as a semester. All in all, we are continuing with this product. However, I am purchasing other materials for reference for myself and for extra practice. The children are really learning. On Sundays, when our pastor makes a reference to something in Greek, the children are often familiar with what he is referencing. I hope this is helpful in making your purchase.

Elementary Greek is a simple program that moves at a satisfying pace without being overwhelming. The textbook, workbook, cd and flashcards all work together to help the student grasp the subject matter. As a teacher-led program for upper elementary through middle school, or an independent program for motivated older students, Elementary Greek is great!

New Testament Greek, NOT modern! |

Because of my ignorance of the Greek language, I bought this not knowing that Koine is neither modern nor ancient. After listening to the CD for a few minutes my 7 year old (who had taken several modern Greek classes) said "they are not saying the letters correctly, Mom." I would not recommend this curriculum if your intent is to ever speak Greek in your travels.
