Grammar and Punctuation Practice
Editor in Chief improves your child's grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and attention to detail using a standards-based thinking approach rather than drill and practice. This effective method teaches students to carefully analyze and edit stories that contain errors in writing mechanics and story details.

The stories involve mixed-skills practice, starting with easier errors and becoming more challenging as students become adept at the editing process.

Students identify and circle errors in each story. They then insert, modify, or delete punctuation, words, and short phrases to make corrections. An editing checklist and annotated guide to grammar, usage, and punctuation are provided to help focus students' thinking and allow them to match their answers to applicable rules.

The curriculum is very good. July 16, 2014
Reviewer: Michele S.
The curriculum is very good. But, because it was our first time using it, we needed a lower level. C1 is very advanced for 9th graders who are not very strong in grammar. Ordered B1 and B2 instead. B1 is going to be PLENTY challenging to get used to, however, I believe once the child moves on to C1 they will have a great eye for finding errors. My kids are excited about doing B1 this year. Both are very strong in writing, but, not grammar. They think it looks very fun and will make learning grammar less of a headache!! My friends daughters used all levels and both went on to score nearly perfect SAT scores, so I am hopeful.

Review by As For My House January 3, 2012
Reviewer: Tiffany from Timberdoodle's Blogger Review Team
We are not a fan of “busywork”, so we don’t have a lot of workbooks in the house. I like these because they are geared towards thinking skills, not rote memorization of facts or lists.

Nick was actually interested in doing the Editor in Chief lessons, when I showed him the book.

Once we did the first lesson, and he got the hang of what they were really wanting, he actually asked to do another one – which turned into two – just to do better and explore it some more. For some children that might be typical behavior, but I assure you that around here that is not usually the case!

As always, we did have some discussions about the finer points of punctuation rules and writing style. With an 11th Grade student, it’s not all as clear-cut as the Little’s punctuation rules.

I think this book would be a great review or supplementation resource for High Schoolers, maybe mostly 9th and 10th Grade. I’d be curious, now, to check out the higher levels in this series.

I’m not sure if you would use this as part of your primary curriculum, either, but it is certainly a nice “fun” way to get some learning done in spite of Spring Fever.

Review by The Legacy of Home December 30, 2011

Amy (16) used this workbook. She found it challenging. We did a couple of lessons together so she could get the hang of things. Soon she was analyzing and finding mistakes like a professional!

This book is an excellent tool for teaching writing skills. I believe children learn the most during the editing process because mistakes become very clear. Students will get in the habit of reviewing their own work before handing in final papers. They will take their editing skills and use them to become better writers.

I purchased B1 for my 14 year old. When it came my 16 year old looked it over and wanted to know why I hadn't purchased her one too. So I ordered her C1 and she does it for fun. It's great that you can order a workbook that teaches spelling and grammar that they want to do for fun.
I love that Timberdoodle sells curriculum that is educational and my children want to use it.

Editor in Chief is such a worthwhile program! September 26, 2011

I am a firm believer in the importance of proofreading!  I tell my children often that we all make mistakes, but it is every writer's responsibility to check for their own mistakes.  Just think how much embarrassment we could save ourselves!
Editor in Chief is an interesting, fun way to practice proofreading/editing skills in just a few minutes a day.  I like the balance between obvious errors and those that take some time and awareness to find.  I also like the fact that they sneak in a lot of interesting information on topics my children might not otherwise read about.
