I wish I had used this program for my three oldest |

After years of tearful math instruction, we read Timberdoodle's catalog entry and decided to try Developmental Math. My children went from math blockheads to math brainiacs. Well, okay, not really. Maybe I chose levels that were too easy for them. But my first grader loved whipping through Level One (so did my three year old); my third grader finds Level Four just his speed; the fifth grader's Level Eight was right on target; and the seventh grader's Level Eleven makes her happy. Each one finds success at his/her own level and now feels competent in math. I just wish I had used this program for my three oldest, none of whom feels especially math-literate.

Teaches one concept at a time |

I am homeschooling three grandchildren. We began when they were in K, 1st and 2nd grades are now in our fourth year of homeschooling. I used this series in the beginning because the children were very weak in Math. The course progresses very slowly, building concept as well as Math fact memory. This series works well at building foundation, however it stays pretty much on one concept throughout each book. This can be a shortcoming if you are required to give standardized teats at years end. We continue to use Developmental Math as a supplement when there is a lag in the learning and for extra practice. One of the children (now in 5th grade) does D.M. exercises daily along with her other Math course. This keeps her feeling successful and I can be sure she has enough of the broad course work for the end of year standardized test.

Great for the struggling student... |

This product is a DIFFERENT way to teach math. My very "math inclined" 8 year old would rather do drills to quickly memorize math sentences after a lesson on a concept. So, I've switched him to a more traditional math program. However, my 6 year old is the perfect student for a program like this. She has learned to do problems more quickly by regrouping, with FAR less effort than speed drills would provide. I do plan to use this as a suppliment for her, but continue with a traditional math program as well. If you have a student that struggles with basic math, this is a great way to have him or her see it a different way with very little stress. If your student takes to these concepts, literature (yes lit.) books by Gregg Tang would be helpful as well.

A clear presentation of each math component |

This is the easiest to follow math program we've used. We tried Singapore Math, just to see how it compared. My son immediately asked when we could go back to Developmental Math, since it doesn't skip around from concept to concept. It is such a clear presentation of each math component that my "fourth grade" son is finishing up "sixth grade" math this year. We've purchased the whole set of curriculum so we won't be caught off guard if the publisher ever decides to discontinue the series. I'm also very impressed that Timberdoodle offers the Answer Key/Teacher's Guide and the Test. Other curriculum dealers list them separately and aren't clear that there are three components to each unit. Thank you and blessings to you, Timberdoodle!

Self-paced, simple format, great program! |

This is a great program for kids that need some time to master math concepts. It begins with the concrete and moves to the abstract with lots of review. The modules are self paced so if they already know a certain concept I can allow them to jump through quickly. If there are struggles I can provide the student with more practice by redoing a section or supplementing from another source. The simple workbook style keeps everything in one place. A student could read for themselves all the instructions and proceed, though I found that my boys needed my instruction and explanation to get started on new section with new concepts. My boys went through 1 to 3 levels a year. So far we have used books 1-14 between two of them over the last 3 years.
