Timberdoodle's review

Decimals, Fractions, and the Metric System: Concepts and Basic Skillsextends place value to tenths, hundredths…, and applies the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations to decimals. Level 13 introduces the Metric measurements of length, capacity, and weight. The publisher recommends it be used as the 1st half of 7th grade, but we think it would be better suited as the 1st half of 6th grade.

About Developmental Math:
Let's be candid, some children grasp math more easily than others. For the child that intuitively understands mathematical concepts and is easily bored, check out Horizon's Math.

But if you regularly experience the deer-in-the-headlights look from your child whenever new mathematical topics are introduced, you will be relieved to know that there is a more systematic, precept upon precept math program.

With simple, uncluttered pages, Developmental Mathematics is a series that first teaches concepts with drawings of real objects, next with mathematical symbols, then drills for speed, and finally applies the concepts to word problems.

New ideas are introduced step by step in logical order while concepts that have been mastered are reviewed periodically. This program is so straightforward that the teacher's manual is little more than a student book with answers.

If you want to give your child an exceptionally solid mathematical foundation, if you are looking for a program that is student-driven with minimal parental involvement, if your child is shaky on the basics, or if you are just looking for an inexpensive, no frills, common sense program, you are sure to be pleased with Developmental Mathematics.

A Word To The Wise
The publisher of this outstanding program is facing financial difficulties, a situation which has resulted in a couple of titles currently being out of print. On his behalf, we apologize for the inconvenience and hope the situation will be reversed when the economy recovers. Should you have any questions about what to do in the meantime, we will be happy to answer them.

A clear presentation of each math component October 31, 2008
Reviewer: Mary S. from Caldwell, TX
This is the easiest to follow math program we've used. We tried Singapore Math, just to see how it compared.  My son immediately asked when we could go back to Developmental Math, since it doesn't skip around from concept to concept.  It is such a clear presentation of each math component that my "fourth grade" son is finishing up "sixth grade" math this year.  We've purchased the whole set of curriculum so we won't be caught off guard if the publisher ever decides to discontinue the series.  I'm also very impressed that Timberdoodle offers the Answer Key/Teacher's Guide and the Test.  Other curriculum dealers list them separately and aren't clear that there are three components to each unit.  Thank you and blessings to you, Timberdoodle!

Pros and Cons October 24, 2008
Reviewer: Debbie B. from Waterloo, IA
My oldest daughter began using Develomental Math Level 10 at the age of 10. The blackline representations of unit, tens, and hundreds blocks were helpful, as abstract concepts take longer for her to grasp. These books do contain a few editing errors (a wrong answer here, an omitted diagram there). This curriculum was not the best choice for my son, who naturally excels at math, or for my other daughter, who struggles with reading comprehension. However, it has been a GREAT choice for my firstborn, who is a motivated learner and a good reader, but has to work hard to "get" new concepts. Developmental Math has given her freedom to work independently, without watching a video and with very little help from me. She LOVES it!!!

Self-paced, simple format, great program! October 21, 2008
Reviewer: Vicky M. from Indian, Alaska
This is a great program for kids that need some time to master math concepts. It begins with the concrete and moves to the abstract with lots of review. The modules are self paced so if they already know a certain concept I can allow them to jump through quickly. If there are struggles I can provide the student with more practice by redoing a section or supplementing from another source. The simple workbook style keeps everything in one place. A student could read for themselves all the instructions and proceed, though I found that my boys needed my instruction and explanation to get started on new section with new concepts. My boys went through 1 to 3 levels a year. So far we have used books 1-14 between two of them over the last 3 years.

Now they can work independently! October 20, 2008
Reviewer: Anita H. from Westminster, CA
Before using Developmental math I was spending 45-1hr. with each child on their math.  Math was our whole day!!  Now with developmental math they can work independently and we are free to spend more time on other subjects.  I believe it is a very solid math program. However, it does not include time or measurement so you will need to purchase those workbooks separately.  Kumon workbooks or the Key To series works well.
