Physical & Life Sciences for Grades 5 – 8
What a marvelous supplemental science curriculum for those of you teaching multiple students in grades 5 through 8. The Core Science's full-color 96-page illustrated instruction manual focuses on 45 themes to reinforce the science concepts your child should be learning.
Mass and volume, the human body, chemical reactions, soil analysis, optics, rockets, electricity, circuits and more all at three different levels of proficiency easy, moderate, and advanced.
45 Topics with three experiments each:
This gives you the option of doing three related, and increasingly difficult experiments a week. For example Track A in experiment 3, which involves changes in mass and temperature, starts off with a child-pleasing look at the varying weight of a soaking gummi bear. Track B of the same experiment requires charting air, water and soil temperatures for 12 hours and Track C examines what happens when an effervescent tablet is added to a full glass of water.
Experiment 11, air pressure and vacuums, begins with inflating a balloon with an effervescence tablet, then track B tries to do the same with a hot and cold bottle and finally track C investigates how to get a hard-boiled egg into a narrow- necked bottle without damaging it.
You can relegate each track to a particular child or children. You can even have your child do a different track each year for the next three years, but I suspect that once your family starts to use this curriculum, no one will want to stop at one experiment a week!
A convenient 48-page workbook has space to record results for all three levels of the 45 experiments and additional information to complement what your child is studying.
Correlated to National Science Education Standards
Regardless on how you tackle it you will be glad to know that Core Science has been correlated to National Science Education Standards for middle school level physical and life science, and will give your children necessary familiarity with commonly used science terms, methods, and tools.
Core Science comes with virtually everything you will need to complete the experiments. You will need to supply some common household items and 2 "C" batteries.
Core Science MS-1 is a supplemental science curriculum for students entering grades 5 through 8. By performing the experiments in this kit and completing exercises in the accompanying workbook, students will lay the groundwork for success in natural science courses in school. The content is correlated to the National Science Education Standards for middle school level physical and life science. The hands-on experiments enliven the learning process, adding powerful firsthand experiences to their science education. This is an effective way to not only teach important scientific concepts and knowledge, but also to foster an inquisitive attitude and a deep interest in the exploration of the world through science. Students will also gain familiarity with commonly used science terms, methods, and tools, preparing them for future studies.
In the kit, there are 45 topics with three experiments each: an easy introductory experiment, a more involved experiment, and a challenging experiment for more advanced students. In this way, the students are both encouraged and challenged. Some of the experiment topics include mass and volume, length and area, heat and temperature, the human body, chemical reactions, soil analysis, plants and seeds, the properties of water, light and lenses, refraction and reflection, pressure, flight, the phases of matter, density, buoyancy, force and motion, important properties of various chemicals, acids and bases, indicators, animal observations, optics, filtration, weather, rockets, electricity, batteries, circuits, and magnetism.
The full-color, 96-page experiment manual provides illustrated instructions and explanations, and the black-and-white, 48-page workbook guides students through each experiment and allows them to record their findings. Ages 10 and up.
