Language Arts and Reading
Editor In Chief provides your student a story with a mock newspaper article and photo. Engaging and often entertaining, the stories suffer from multiple problems, which the child must correct; a fascinating way to review grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and attention to detail.
Wordsmith Craftsman focuses on building, integrating, and polishing practical writing skills. Strong in preparing the student for college, Part 1 addresses practical, everyday writing: notes, outlines, personal correspondence, summaries, business letters and reports. Part 2 focuses on the power of language: paragraphs (principles, types, and organization), writing techniques, and developing a personal writing style. Part 3 concentrates on essay writing: descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive essays. Wordsmith equips young adults for a lifetime of excellence in communication skills.
Everyone agrees that children who have a solid grasp of word roots are bound to be children with better spelling and reading comprehension skills primarily because they have acquired the ability to decode words. But how do you teach Latin and Greek roots? Well, we knew we didn't want something too dull, too schoolish, too intense, or based too heavily on mythology. We also knew that moms are busy enough without another teacher-intensive topic to worry about. With those objectives clarified, it was easy to see that Word Roots is perfect, with its self-teaching, simple and engaging approach. We've not seen any word roots program more effortless than this one!
By 10th grade, your child's reading likely mirrors his interests. Whether that be firefighting or engineering, cultivate his desire to learn through reading. Assign reading if you must, but encourage it at all costs; a child who enjoys reading will find it easier to excel in every area. By this grade you'll likely be acquainting him with classical literature. If this is not his area of interest, consider the graphic novel versions, they are often a much more palatable option. |

Math
Finally, a math text designed for homeschoolers! Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2's friendly text and often humorous line drawings are specifically written to independent learners, and contain far more explanation than any others on the market. Because the Teaching Textbooks series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests.
Secondly, and ultimately what sold me on this program, are their computer CDs with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia solutions for every problem in the book, plus an additional CD-ROM with complete step-by-step solutions for every test problem. The lectures - one for each lesson in the textbook - provide hours of instruction. They cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook, but many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. Field-tested with outstanding results this is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program? |

Thinking Skills
The Thinking Toolbox is a very entertaining method for cultivating logical thinking. Written by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, the same young men who wrote the widely popular The Fallacy Detective, The Thinking Toolbox is destined to be one of those rare must-have books for all homes where thinking skills are prized. Lessons cover (1) When it is dumb to argue,(2) Using the scientific method, (3) Five rules of brainstorming, (4) Who has a reason to lie? (5) How to analyze opposing viewpoints, (6) How to analyze evidence and sources, (7) How to list reasons why you believe something, and much more.
Once again these brothers have taken what could be an intimidating topic and brought it down to earth. The humorous illustrations give this book a friendly feel. The Thinking Toolbox is best with discussion, so we encourage you to read this as a family if possible |

Science
Integrated Physics & Chemistry is one program that I regret our older children did not have the opportunity to use. It would have been perfect for them because it introduces both physics and chemistry in a way that they would not have found intimidating. This entry-level, applied course gives teens a thorough grounding in basic chemistry and physics. Science concepts are repeated in different ways throughout the sections, and content-rich illustrations, numerous charts, graphs, and data tables assist them in grasping the subject matter. This method is highly engaging and motivates them to learn about the application of physics and chemistry to daily life.
IPC consists of twelve chapters of text and twelve companion student activity books, for 180 lessons. While deliberately avoiding complex mathematical equations, this self-paced, high-school-level science course introduces students to the people, places, and principles of physics and chemistry. Written by internationally respected scientist/author, John Hudson Tiner, IPC effectively draws teens by using a story approach to teaching these complicated topics. What an engaging way to cover these vital topics in an in-depth manner. |

History
Written in a friendly and highly readable manner, The History of the Ancient World is at once engaging and enlightening. Maps and timelines help you grasp the whens and wheres of history, while the stories cement who, what, and why. Not only will you walk away with a big picture of history, but you will also develop a feel for the people of each culture.
Note to our more conservative customers: This book, though authored by a Christian, is written from a history scholar's perspective, not that of a theologian. In other words she gives the Bible a fair hearing, but places it alongside any other historical documents, without distinction. Read The History of the Ancient World with that in mind and you will find that there is a wealth of information in this volume about the peoples, nations, cultures, and wars of the Bible.
With no worksheets or lengthy activities, this is a great opportunity for your student to relax and get the big picture. However, if he has not really studied history before, he will probably find it helpful to combine this with Mystery Of History, Volume 1. (call us to modify your bundle) |

Many of you are required by your state to test your child yearly. AEP Test Prep gives you a way to prepare for that in a no-stress manner. Explains strategies and techniques for answering different kinds of questions as well as offering multiple tests in reading, math, and language arts to provide comprehensive practice in key subjects required for proficiency. For those of you who want to know, this is an older test guide (2001) but still the best one we've found so far. The ability to take tests is indispensible for any child so we've included AEP Test Prep for free with the recommendation that he also review any recommended study materials for the specific test he will be taking. |
