Language Arts and Reading
Most children dread grammar study because it is too complex. But Easy Grammar is just that, easy. By deleting and marking certain words or phases, Easy Grammar employs a virtually "hands on" approach. The vocabulary has been kept simple and, in most cases, the sentences rather short. This very logical, simple, no nonsense grammar program is easy to use because each lesson focuses on just one topic. Lots of review helps to ensure comprehensive learning with excellent results.
Daily Traits uses a quick daily lesson approach to build writing skills without overwhelming your child.
Sequential Spelling is not only the most logical spelling program we've seen, but it is also one of the easiest to use. Simply read him one list of words a day to write down, correcting any mistakes as you go. That's it! The sequences are based on building from easy words to advanced words such as from all, tall, stall, install, installment, to installation; an intuitive approach with no memorization required. If your student has not yet completed Sequential Spelling books 1-4, you will want to do them first.
While we believe reading is the single most important skill to cultivate in your sixth grader, you'll notice that we did not include any traditional readers. Don't let this puzzle you. Our experience is that the best way to help your child become an eager reader is to constantly supply him with reading materials that interest him. Future doctors may want to read up on anatomy; young explorers are drawn to the escapades of adventurers young and old; and the baby-lover in your family will be captivated by adoption stories. Assign reading if you must, but encourage it at all costs; a child who enjoys reading will find it easier to excel in every area.
We are including 3 sample Graphic Novels for you, on assorted topics relating to this year's studies. The colorful, engaging approach has been a big hit with eager and reluctant readers alike. |

Math
Finally, a math text designed specifically for homeschoolers! Teaching Textbooks Math 6's engaging and often humorous text is specifically written to independent learners, and generously illustrated with friendly line-drawings. Teaching Textbooks contain far more explanation than any math programs on the market, but because the series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests.
This program is computer based, with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia lectures, problems and solutions. After watching the lecture, your child will complete the problems in their workbook; then enter the answers into the computer, where the digital gradebook keeps track for you. The lectures cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook in greater depth, and many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. Field-tested with outstanding results; this is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction.  Thinking Skills
Without the ability to think things through thoroughly and logically, your child will be severely handicapped. But that doesn't mean that your child must drill endlessly with boring rules of logic. In fact, this year we will provide you with 3 different thinking skill books which address, visual, spatial, and perceptual skills with activities that build deductive, inductive, and logical reasoning. We are sure that Think-A-Minute C1, Think-A-Grams A1, and Mind Benders A4 will all be highlights of this school year.
Please note: if your child has not yet completed Building Thinking Skills 2, we strongly encourage you to do that this year; the foundational skills covered there will be needed throughout his lifetime. Feel free to call us if you need to substitute that book in this grade. |

Science
Biology is a topic which most kids find to be as fun as it is essential. We've provided you with our two very best resources to make this a memorable and fascinating study for your family.
Christian Kids Explore Biology is incredibly user-friendly, supplying suggestions for extra reading and even recommendations of topic-appropriate videos. Plus, at the start of each unit is a list of materials needed for the hands-on portion, much of which you will already have or will be inexpensive to purchase. Based on a classical and "living books" approach, Christian Kids Explore Biology covers the basics of biology, plants, birds, mammals, humans, reptiles, insects, and water creatures.
The Biology 101 DVDs are outstanding; and a rare combination of scientific and Biblically-sound teaching with appealing, enthralling footage. In fact, we have never seen a more engaging approach to biology. Using eye-catching video footage supported by hundreds of captivating visuals and graphics, Wes does an excellent job of explaining even the most complex of topics. And if retention is important to you, you will especially appreciate Wes' effort to cement any new vocabulary through the use of word pictures.
Each of these programs is uniquely well designed, but used in combination we think you'll find this to be an outstanding combination of hands-on study, worksheets, and DVD.
